DEFINITIONS
Empowerment: Policies and measures
designed to increase the degree of autonomy and self-determination in the lives of people and in communities in order to enable them to represent their interests in a responsible and self-determined way, acting on their own authority. Privilege: A special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people.
DEFINITIONS CONT.
Misfit: Someone or something that does
not fit in with others in society Other: View or treat (a person or group of people) as intrinsically different from and alien to oneself.
GARLAND-THOMSON: MISFITTING
the discrepancy between body and world,
that which is expected and that which is, produces fits and misfits (Garland-Thomson 593). Who is anyone to say that you do not fit in with society? Maybe THEY are the ones that do not fit in. They call it social norms (the rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society.)
QUOTE
"I'm tough, I'm ambitious, and I know exactly
what I want. If that makes me a bitch, okay." Madonna According to society, women are not allowed to open their mouths about any thing if it does not have to do with pleasing a man in some way. Women are referred to as bitches any time they give an opinion about something.
WENDELL: THEORY OF DISABILITY
This theory should be feminist, because
more than half of disabled people are women and approximately 16% of women are disabled (Wendell 826).
Disabled women (and men) and constantly being
ridiculed and othered because they are unable to adhere to societys norms In order to gain empowerment, we must stop putting these women down and shaming them because they may not look like you do or they may not be able to do the same things that you do, regardless if they have a disability or not
WHAT WE CAN DO
We need to educate both males and females.
I have heard females say that they are not feminists because they do not know the proper definition "The idea of being a feminist: so many women have come to this idea of it being anti-male and not able to connect with the opposite sex, but what feminism is about is equality and human rights. For me that is just an essential part of my identity."Lena Dunham
