    3-104 (October 23)- Mariams mother was a housecleaner for Mariams father. Her father was a
    wealthy man, Mariams mother had slept with him not being married to him. Mariam was known
    as a harami. She wanted everything to do with her father, she wanted to be loved as much as he
    loved his other children. Since her parents werent married and her mother was a just a house
    maid, Mariams father didnt care for her as much. This cultures mom and dad vs. each other
    highly reflects what goes on in America today. Children feel the need to pick which parents to
    live with and be closer too. It shouldnt have to be that way. I myself come from a divorced
    family and my parents never speak well of one another. In reality living with her so called
    sisters and brothers, would not be how she expects it. They will never claim her as one of
    them. Shes an outsider to them since her mother wasnt one of their fathers wives.
    107-195 (November 6)- What role should family obligations play vs. self wants? What lessons
    does this book have about parenting?
    Family obligations should always become before your self wants. There is a separation
    sometimes when it comes to family and self needs. Everyone needs to take time for themselves
    every once in awhile. Family will always be there for you. In this book it relates a lot to self
    needs and family needs. They put a lot of their needs first, but then when it comes to their family
    they are devoted. In this novel Nana had put her daughter Marium before her own self wants, she
    tried protecting her and caring for her first. Marium showed examples of putter herself needs
    before anyone else. She showed selfishness in the beginning of the novel, then towards the end
    should more for others than herself. This book teaches you certain lessons about parenting. It

    shows that the father figure in this country doesnt show much interest in raising the children.
    They provide the money and shelter for the wives and children. Parenting should be a conjoined
    thing not a one parent duty in my eyes. In this country it shows you that the men are more
    dominate than the women, and that the women are good for cooking, cleaning, and reproducing.
