talking about her recent
British Luxury Fashion

snaps including one gushing over
son Romeo at the Burberry Christmas
party and posting touching tributes

new marriage rules, to make sure that
her and David, 40, continue to remain

September, the pairs relationship had
been under pressure due to their
separate business commitments and
different social lives. But according to
insiders, Victorias keen to merge both

otherwise, step into the real world

Self-defence expert Avital Zeisler shows us how
icture the scene: its dark

outside, youre walking home
after a party or work drinks.
It feels early enough to walk
alone, but you quicken your
pace just in case, your heart beating out
of your chest. You feel uneasy about
your heels clattering down the street,
and cant help but think youre being
followed, or an easy target.
Unfortunately, this feeling is all too
common for most of us. According
to Stop Street Harassment, one in five
females have been followed at least
once. But one woman is hoping to
put an end to these moments of fear
by preparing us for any dangerous
situation, all while wearing heels.
Avital Zeisler, 26, is a Canadian
ballerina-turned-combat expert,
whos trained actresses, including
Amanda Seyfried. Shes passionate
about womens self-defence, and
for good reason.
Avital was sexually assaulted
when she was 19, which meant she
experienced depression, but she
turned to Krav Maga, a form of selfdefence, as part of her recovery. Five
years later, she created The Soteria
Method Soteria is the Greek goddess

for safety. As well as teaching selfdefence techniques, it also focuses on
fitness and empowerment for women
who love wearing heels, whether at
work or when socialising, rather than
flats. The method is based upon Avitals
belief that women shouldnt have
to compromise their style choices
in order to protect themselves.
When I teach self-defence, I want
to make sure its authentic to women.
The point of training in stilettos is that
if youre wearing heels and targeted for
an attack, youre equipped with a few
survival strategies that could end up
saving your life, she says.
Powerful kicks (the result of which
can be even more effective in heels),
sharp elbows and hammering fists are
just some of the moves she teaches in
her class. The objective is to disrupt
the attackers thought process even
just to get him to blink, she explains.
The most crucial part of Avitals
teaching is that her manouevres are
designed to be remembered, even in
scary situations. The idea is to lock in
muscle memory, she says. Amanda

Many of the
women Avital
teaches are getting
over the trauma of
an incident, while
others are there
to feel empowered
and to protect
themselves.
The fact that her
routines double up
as body-scupting workouts is a bonus.
Avital has also put her method into
her book, Weapons Of Fitness (13.99,
Avery), and videos on her website
(Soteriamethod.com), so it can reach
women who cant attend her classes.
While Avitals work is aimed at
women, the message could prove to
be vital to teenagers, too. Self-defence
isnt currently compulsory in schools,
although it has long been campaigned
for here in the UK.
Ultimately, Avitals message is simple:
Self-defence provides women with the
ability to create, live and protect a life
that you love.Amen to that.
