Multi-Camera Production Roles

You will be producing 3-4 interviews during your chat show. For each interview state who will be
doing which role. You must do EVERY role once during the show.
For more information on what each role entails, visit
http://www.bbc.co.uk/academy/collegeofproduction/collections/job_profiles
And search through the video profiles on the site.
TASK 1: Define each of the following roles
Interviewer
Describe their job Reference your research
The interviewer gathers information from the interviewee through a series of questions.
Depending on the nature of the topic, the questions may be more direct than others. For
example a political reporter will be the interviewer for a politician, and will ask very specific
questions about the profession. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32aqb167NkE
However this interviewer on the red carpet wants to put their interviewee at ease, so they ask
more casual questions and alter the way they speak to make it feel like a friendly
conversation. They dont include the interviewer in shot because obviously the camera is
focused on the actor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2k48LNGPXk
In my research, I have collected pieces of evidence of what has been releaed into the music
world within the past year. I have used a reliable source, Wikipedia, which have archived all
releases this year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_2015_albums

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They work in front of the camera, whether its with their voice asking the questions or directly
there with the interviewee because they are the ones to draw the answers out of their
subjects and to provide the audience with entertainment.

What skills do they need to do their job well?

Any sort of Drama or acting ability, either that or public speaking because either way they need
to be confident and collected on camera. They also need to know the subject well, wether its
politics, movies, music or celebrity news.

Director
Describe their job - Reference your research
Director is in charge of everything on the day, where the lights will go, where the interviewer
and interviewee will be placed. The director will read and review the questions beign asked
and will design what kind of goals or accomplishments they have for the day within this
interview.

Production Booklet

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They are supposed to work right at the middle, so they can see as much of the set as possible./
they will drift from looking over the camera mans shoulder, to sitting in the mixing room, and
will interact with the interviewer in the middle of takes. He or she will provide criticism and
change things as the day goes on. There is not one place for the director to be.

What skills do they need to do their job well?

Good leadership skills, a critical eye, and being able to make good changes to a piece of work
and receive criticism as well as give it.

Camera Person
Describe their job - Reference your research
They are hired sometimes outside the company or within the company to function the camera
and are in charge of making sure the shot is abiding by standard camera rules. They
construct the camera. And the director will determine for them what kind of angles will be
used in the scene or shot.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They work behind the camera, and will keep eyes focused on the different instruments of the
camera. They are not in charge of editing the footage that they have recorded and must pass
that onto the editor. In an interview they will be in charge of either focusing the camers and
holding it up on the field. Or if they are in a studio, they will be in charge of several cameras
there along with other camerapeople.

What skills do they need to do their job well?

They need to have experience in using, constructing cameras as well as knowledge of
cinematography and photography. How to use a camera.

Sound Mixing
Describe their job - Reference your research
Sound can change at any moment in the video. The sound mixer will be in charge of stabilising all
sound, making sure that the balance between background music, background sound, interviewer
and interviewee is stable. The audience needs to hear what is most important in that time.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)

They would work behind the scenes in the mixing room, with sometimes a few others, they listen
out for any changes and will have access to high quality sound tools, form there they will be able to

Production Booklet

What skills do they need to do their job well?

They need extensive knowledge in the field of sound, and to know how to use all the sound and
mixing tools given to them. To be able to listen out for audio queues.

Vision Mixing
Describe their job - Reference your research
A vision mixer is under direct command of the director. A vision mixer (also called video switcher,
video mixer or production switcher) is a device used to select between several different video
sources and in some cases compositing (mix) video sources together to create special effects.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)

They work is under direct command of the director, and behind the scenes in the control room.
When the queues are prompted, they will shift the visuals on-screen to a different image or video to
move the show along. They have to keep in time with the rest of the show, because there is always
a risk of switching too early or switching to the wrong thing.
What skills do they need to do their job well?
They need to have experience with the mixing desk for the visuals. They need to know how to use
a vision mixing desk . and they need to know about editing and

Graphics Generator
Describe their job - Reference your research
The graphics generator is in charge of making any overlays involved in the making of the interview.
Any necessary art that needs to be involved with the interview, either to prompt meories form the
viewer. These could include music album art, or movie covers. An example of graphics used can be
found here
https://vimeo.com/4063587

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
When live, the graphics generator will be in the control room near sound and visuals. They work as
a team, working around the different primps, they will need to be able to communicate to each other
when queues are due.

Production Booklet

What skills do they need to do their job well?

They may want to create the required graphics themselves rather than finding them on the internet,
so experience with either Photoshop or other such programs is necessary.
They need to be mindful of timings because in the control room everyone will need to be in time
with one another. Teamwork.

Lighting Desk
Describe their job - Reference your research

Lighting desk is under direct command of the director. Director will let the lighting desk know what
kin d of lighting needs to be made. The lighting for an interview is entirely dependant on the tone of
the interview. Music and movies will usually be colourful, and flashy. And may require different
colours. However the more serious politics or news will require more standard and intricate lighting.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They would work in the control room along with visuals, audio and graphics. As they need a clear
view from a contained place to be able to listen out for their time. They will have a large desk with
all the pre-sets they need for the interview. And will be briefed by the director

What skills do they need to do their job well?

Good eye for colour. Knowing when to use certain lighting is important because it needs to match
the mood of the interview. A degree in this type of media would be useful because it means they
would have worked with this a lot in the past.

Floor Manager
Describe their job - Reference your research
The floor manager is similar to the director, in that a lot of what goes towards the interview running
smoothly will lie with them. They wont have as much input as the director, as the director has the
final say, but will definitely recommend any required changes that the director may have missed. If
the director is elsewhere they will be making sure all the technology is running well and the
interviewer and interviewee are comfortable

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They will work prominently on the studio floor, making sure that from a side-line view, everything
looks like it should. They will pop into the control from every now and again to double check for the
director that everything is working without fault.

Production Booklet

What skills do they need to do their job well?

Critical eye for detail. The ability to handle situations under stress. Good leadership skills. To be
able to help as well as be helped.
