Outline of my idea
In a nutshell, my idea is the concept of a gentle and elegant dancer taking the form of a white
peacock to convey the main character of the video. My music video will be to the song Gasoline by
Halsey and will be mainly based on visuals rather than story. We will get to know the violent nature
and attitude of this character throughout the song, and will contain a lot of bird-like imagery.
My idea was mainly influenced by movies I have watched such as the black swan and kung fu
panda 2, which are strong influences because of their theme of birds, and power, which are clear
themes throughout the films.

Target audience
When researching my TA ( Target Audience) I had looked at the genre of song that I was usingelectro pop and what kind of people would be attracted to the song BEFORE they would think to be
attracted to the video itself.
As drawn from another online media project, I have discovered that Halseys audience is that of a
female teenage audience which I will peg at about 13-to 18 in middle class, but at the very oldest I
will say that women of up to age 35 in the middle class can enjoy it. This is mainly because of
Halseys relaxed attitude towards her fans and followers and they are treated as friends of hers
through various social media, as well as this, due to the prominent twitter following she has ~( 55
thosuand followers) she is able to distribute her music to a wide audience for free, with nothing
more than a quick upload and publishing on the internet.

Halseys Song- gasoline does not yet have a video, so it has been open to various interpretations
by other students, in the market this is known as a market competitor, someone else who is aiming
for the same audience, the same genre as you too, I have to do my best to compliment the song in
its own way and make my video stand out. To name a few, there are some very good videos out
there already which earn good credit for the song, I do not claim to have better ideas than they do,
but appreciate I have a criteria to live up to when approaching this song. Various competitors
include a YouTube user who is using the same form of distribution as me- youtube.com. Their
name is sunnyDkid96 and have re-edited
other Halsey videos to create a new one.
They have a slice in the already existing
market for her video, taking an
individual Vaporwave approach to It.,
another person on YouTube, called
Matthew alexander has also created their
own fan made music video.

Matthew has taken more of a

simple projection approach and has
focused more on a person singing
and being an active part of the
video. They use more home-made
visuals and appears to be a studentproduction made with their school
or college course, which is the same
thing as Im doing, however this
version of the video and the video
before takes a different approach to it than me, and theyve taken a more psychedelic route using
vibrant colors to convey their message. I will be going in a different direction as you will soon
discover.

similar setting and the characters movements
from their video dead inside the core of the
music video ( characters, Setting and
choreography) very appropriate for the tone of its
song. Muse like to keep it very simple in terms of
environment and character design and audience
appeal.

I want my audience (16-35 year old middle class women) I would like something very elegant but
still engaging and the mystery women from dead inside is very reminiscent of that.

I have noticed that a lot of the fans that tend to like muse are around early 20s to mid/late 30s.
There were a couple of instances where I've seen like old men usually in there 50s but it was usually
at least a handful of them only. I wouldn't know the demographic of the people that just listen to
them but I would say that it wouldn't change much at all considering most of the people that listen
to their music also go to their concerts as well.
Males: Early 20s (usually) - Mid/late 30's (with exceptions)
Females: Late Teens (from what I've seen) - Late 20s to early 30's
Dead inside has a very interesting style that I would like to mimic, it is very simple and based on
the simple notion of movement. The subject in the video seems very disjointed and corrupt when
they move, and its a very interesting thing to watch, the simple setting is very reminiscent of
something from the apocalypse or death as theres a lot of dust everywhere alongside the
black/white setting. Its very clear the female dancer is more important to the video than the male
because of how the camera follows her about, her deadpan facial expression make her more
disconnected from the other dancer, too, pushing her more forward as she is more mysterious than
he is.

Environment
The environment of the character is a big inspiration for me and will be my main competition
with the original music video, managing to develop a dusty terrain for the character to dance
on.
Costume
The costume of the character will be of the same colour but instead be in more of a peacock-like
style. This factor of the video I have against the original video because mine is a unique design to
the original.

Katy perry- peacock was another influence, not in music but in style. I like the idea of a person
being the embodiment of the white peacock and representing it in the video. She is another
competitor of mine because I need to be able to retain originality and still represent the white
peacock in my own original way.

Why this song?

If you listen very closely to the song you will hear what could easily be a Guzehng instrument, or
another Chinese string instrument which is a Traditionally used to make this recognizable sound in
culture. Because of this sound, it lead me to make the connection to traditional Chinese animals,
and because of films that have influenced me such as the black swan and Lord shen,, I immediately
though of my personal favorite- the peacock, a very graceful bird much like the sound itself, but as
the song progresses and hints of more, aggressive electropop is introduced, it is a sign that perhaps
my character could change, too.
