PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS
The formal arrangement of the academic quadrangle is
deliberate and orders a chaotic set of existing pieces. The
underlying symmetry is a powerful gesture and begins to
establish a clear organization on the site as a whole and
within the campus.
The site topography rises approximately 10 m.
Compensating for the grade change, the academic core is
terraced upward carving three platforms and establishing a
formality and hierarchy not previously found.
The massing, positioning and adjacency of buildings define
the boundary to the learning environment while embracing
an inner palm court.

Campus buildings are situated on terraces as

the slope changes. A consistent and singular
roofline across all colleges and buildings is
then achieved striking a horizontal datum
reinforced by a continuous shade canopy.

CONTEXT
A comprehensive Master Plan prepared by Ayers
Sainte Grosse was created to support and bring to
light this vision, located near the holy pilgrimage city
of Puri in the state of Orissa near the Bay of Bengal,
on the eastern coast of India. Situated in one of the
most economically challenged regions of India, the
University is expected to not only provide high-quality
education to the country, but medical care and a
higher standard of living for the inhabitants of the
surrounding region through job creation and the
economic stimulus that comes with servicing the
needs of a large institution. Currently low-lying
agricultural land, the site will be graded to create
both experiential, campus-wide features and to
address the climatic challenges of flooding, drainage
and stormwater management in the hot, humid 30
locale.

The Vedanta University Teaching Hospital will be one

of the critical first components of the Master Plan to
be implemented, and is intended to be a catalyst for
attracting faculty, staff, medical professionals and
students to the University. As an icon, it will
represent all that the University stands for:
development that embraces a sustainable future,
reflects subtly the uniqueness of the Orissan and
Indian culture of its origins, and becomes a physical
symbol of the high-technology future that is fueling
India’s rise to greatness within the world stage. As a
teaching facility, the hospital is designed to lay the
groundwork for state-of-the-art synergies in
interdisciplinary education between the allied health
fields, and act as one of the primary interfaces
between the University and the public.

CLIENT’S GOALS
The Plan zones the publicly accessible medical functions of hospital, outpatient
clinics, central plant, future hospital expansions, and specialty medical institutes
on the south side of the canal, along with a future research facility. North of the
canal is zoned for the more academically oriented functions including the Colleges
of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering and related academic
uses, all linked to the hospital by the open space amenities, arcades and courts
lining the canal, and connected by the same canal westward to the rest of the
University proper.

support and services spaces. Labor and delivery,
laboratories/testing and the nursery and intensive
care unit define level one. Level two encompasses
surgery, preparatory and recovery.

The bed towers constitute an east and south tower.

The east tower is five levels while the south tower has
six levels. The typical floor plan locates the private
patient rooms to the outer perimeter, support services
and nurses stations are centrally located and typical
ward beds on the inner perimeter overlooking the
courtyard and roof gardens..

Use of the Clinic is expected to be very high. To accommodate the numbers of patients and family
members measures have been taken to reduce the impact on the clinic interior and public areas by
providing protected areas outside but in close proximity to the main entrance lobby for people to
congregate and wait in shaded and covered areas.
The clinic is on two floors connected with a grand stair between the lobby and upper level. The
public circulation space is on the outside wall of the clinic overlooking the South Tower of the
Hospital and the main entry court. Clinics are paired on each floor to share a reception and
common waiting area within the public circulation zone.
