Pelican

Designed and diagrammed by Joshua Goutam

The Pelican is a very popular subject in
Origami, and i wanted to try one. Although
many Origami masters have designed one,
i have felt that almost none of them have a
large enough lower beak, or the right colour
changes. I took that challenge upon myself
and here's the final result. It also has a closed
belly, which is a nice touch to the model. The
design is relatively simple, and the Bird base
is it's starting point.

Paper: Wet fold

Size: 35cm
Time to fold: 50 mins

1. Fold the preliminary base.

Crease Pattern

2. Make 4 reverse folds.

3. There is no reference mark

for this fold. make the bottom
folds and
the top squash fold
should
appear.

4. Like this. fold over one flap.

Do not flatten.
5. Flatten as shown.
6. Like so. Fold over a flap and
repeat steps 4-5 on the right.

7. Petal fold.

8. Fold over two flaps.

9. Fold the edges out as shown.

The model will not lie flat.

10. Fold one flap to the left

11. Fold another flap over
whilst incorpotating a reverse
and repeat steps 8-10 on the
fold that will form a colour changed right.
flap.

12. Turn over.

15. Outside reverse

fold.
13. Valley folds. A squash fold
will form....

14. Like this. Note the

squash fold

18. Bring one layer from inside to the

top, forming a colour change.
16. Outside reverse fold
both flaps together.

19. Focus on the top of

the lower beak.

17. Scale change.

20. Open all the layers.

21. Spread out and shape

the flap like step 22.

22. Like this. Collapse as shown.

25. Mountain fold twice.

23. focus on the tip of

the lower beak.

26. Re-fold like step 22 and make

sure the tip is pointed.

28. Shape the wings to your taste.

There are many ways...

31. Open the layers a little.

24. Make a random, but

relatively small mountain fold.

29. Thinnen the neck down.

32. Crimp/Squash fold for feet.

27. Crimp
the tail.

30. Focus on the legs...

33. Shape the legs and feet,

Thin the legs with mountain folds.

34. View from underneath. 35. on the right (or left) there
should be flap that was folded
in at step 13. Pull it out and shape
the belly.

37. Completed Pelican.

36. Like so... Now shape the

model to taste. There are many
different ways of how to do this,
so use your imagination.
