Cigarette smoking may raise the risk of
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), according
to a new study that adds new evidence to the
growing link between smoking and the rare
muscle-wasting disease.
Researchers say previous studies have
suggested that cigarette smoking may be a risk
factor for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrigs
disease, but the results have been conflicting or
involved only a small number of participants.

As is often the case with pharmaceutical drugs,
the side effects end up teaching us new things
about how the human body works. When statins
first hit the market, conventional medicine was
unaware of the importance of cholesterol for
proper brain function. Now, researchers believe
that statins adverse effects on cognition are due
to cholesterol insufficiency.
Research also began to emerge in 2001 showing
the importance of cholesterol in the formation
of memories.

Physical activity

An increased risk of ALS with higher levels of

leisure time physical activity was found in the
present study. The lack of association with
occupational physical activity and the absence of a
dose-response relationship strengthen the
hypothesis that not increased physical activity per
se but rather a genetic profile or lifestyle promoting
physical fitness increases ALS susceptibility.

GENERAL INFLUENCES CHART

Directions: Determine how the General Influences listed below influence or connect with your health fair topic
in regards to health maintenance and disease prevention decisions. Please record ONE response for EACH
category. Write your response in a complete sentence.
YOU MUST CITE YOUR SOURCEBE SPECIFIC (book title, web site address, newspaper, journal, magazine, etc)

HEALTH FAIR TOPIC: ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease)

General Influences
Media: Write a specific example of how your topic is influenced by media
Media category (e.g. magazines, newspapers, billboards, advertising, TV, radio, videos,
films, etc) Choose one category : Advertising

Eventually, ALS weakens muscles, including muscles used for

breathing, until they become paralyzed. Unable to swallow, patients with
ALS may aspirate or inhale food or saliva into their lungs. In fact, most
people with ALS die of respiratory failure. The ability to think, see, hear,
smell, taste and touch, however, usually is not affected.

Culture or Populations: Write a specific example of how your topic is influenced by
different cultures or populations.
Culture or population (e.g. your topic and different groups of peoplemen, women,
children, teenagers, elderly, etc)Choose one culture or population: ALS in Elderly

ALS is most prominent in the elderly folk vs the younger generations.

It is more prominent with the older generations because of the drugs they
used in the past helped to cause ALS.

1. List your topic: ALS Or Lou Gehrig's Disease

4

2. Create a list of 5 research questions about this topic. This research is the main criteria for your
project. You must answer each research question in-depth using the criteria listed below. What is a
research question?
o Essential Questions are broad based questions that CANT be answered with a yes or no.
o Essential Questions should be appropriate for your target audience.
o Essential Questions should teach your audience something new and in-depth
o Essential Questions may start with who, what, when, where, how, why Essential Questions
are similar to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about your topic (You can Google search this)

RESEARCH GRADING CRITERIA: In order to get 5 points for each of your research questions, you must meet the
following criteria.

1.

(Ask yourself the following questions about EACH of your research questions)
Criteria
Questions are audience specific and broad based (Cant be answered with a yes or no)

(Is this research question audience specific and broad? Cant be answered with a yes or no?)

2.
More than one source is used to answer EACH research question. Each source is parenthetically
cited within the text.
(Did I use more than one source (from my works cited) to answer this research question?)(Did I cite my sources?)

3.

Information is in-depth and teaches the target audience something new.

Is my information in-depth? Does this information teach my audience something new?

4.

All of my sources are documented on my works cited (including videos).

(Did I cite my information properly? Did I include my sources on my works cited?)

5.
Appropriate pictures, charts, graphs, videos, slide shows, etc are used in answering EACH
research question.
(Did I use appropriate pictures, charts, graphs, videos, etc when answering my research questions?)

Research Questions Worksheet:

1.

Question: What is ALS?

Research from source 1 ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a
5

progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain

and the spinal cord. A-myo-trophic comes from the Greek language. "A"
means no. "Myo" refers to muscle, and "Trophic" means nourishment "No
muscle nourishment." When a muscle has no nourishment, it "atrophies" or
wastes away. "Lateral" identifies the areas in a person's spinal cord where
portions of the nerve cells that signal and control the muscles are located.
As this area degenerates it leads to scarring or hardening ("sclerosis") in the
region.
(source:http://www.alsa.org/about-als/what-is-als.html)
Research from source 2 Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive
neurological disease that causes muscle weakness and gradually impacts on the
functioning of the body, leading to eventual death. It is also referred to as motor neuron
disease or Lou Gehrig's disease, named after the famous baseball player who had the
condition.
