Crystallization

ALEJO, FRANCES GABRIELLE A.

4CHE-C

Problem:
A Chemical engineer was to be assigned to produce CaSO4.2H2O
crystals at 24 degrees Celsius using a scraped surface crystallizer.
He then fed in the crystallizer a saturated CaSO4 solution at 80
degrees Celsius and it was then cooled by water entering at 20
degrees Celsius with a mass rate of 10000 kg/hr and leaving at 45
degrees Celsius. The engineer was asked:
a.) what is the feed rate supplied in the process?
b.) If the mass rate of the water is not given, what will be the
amount of crystals per hr at 30C in the process? Given that the
overall coefficient is 500 W/m2-K and the area 1.5m
