PF2304 Week 1 Summary

O&M in the Context of FM

Introduction

The module will be co-facilitated by Associate Professor Daniel Wong and me. I am responsible for the
first six lectures and the first two tutorials.

I explained my background and teaching philosophy to you, and sought your support in committing to a
three-step learning algorithm so as to achieve maximum benefit from this module.

I shared with you best practices from your peers who have done well in modules that I facilitated.

Handouts 1 and 2 detailed Lecture Schedule and Tutorial Schedule, respectively.

References

I provided a reading list, and singled out Operations Management (Slack, Brandon-Jones and Johnston)
as the reference text that I shall follow closely for this module.

In the coming weeks, I shall provide supplementary reading to you in the form of articles, reports and
commentaries scoured from various media for the purpose of case studies as well as relating the module
to current events.

Field Trip

I explained the purpose and scope of the proposed field trip to SATS Food Solutions on Monday 22 Feb. It
will be a half-day programme comprising talks, operational briefings, tour of in-flight kitchens and Q&A.
Please mark the date on your calendar and let me know if you have difficulties joining this trip.

Overview

I shared with you four learning outcomes for this module, and explained that all teaching activities and
assessments will be geared to delivering these outcomes.

The modules emphasis will be on the management dimension so as to strengthen the current FM
curriculum.

We discussed what success means to an organization, definition of operations management and the
transformational function of operations.

We also covered on a high-level basis a range of O&M implications in the context of facilities
management, and came to the observation that O&M plays a critical role in growing the business and
securing customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Continuous Assessment (CA)

I explained the themes for two case studies to be discussed in Tutorial 1and 2.

There will be a mid-term written assignment which requires your individual effort. I explained the
assignment title, format, timeline and basis of assessment.
