Paper Critique : An Approximate Method for Loss Sensitivity

Calculation in Unbalanced Distribution Systems.

Loss sensitivity calculation plays an important role in power system economic
studies. So far the research for distribution LMP has assumed balanced three phase
distribution system. This paper proposed an approximate method for calculating
nodal loss sensitivities for large unbalanced radial distribution network. For large
unbalanced models loss sensitivities calculations is very complex therefore few
assumption are made in this paper such as: For a small demand increase in phase 1
at node n, the changes of current in the other two phases throughout all network
branches and shunts are insignificant, for a small demand increase in phase 1 at
node n, the changes of current in phase for all network branches and shunts
downstream from node (relative to the substation) are insignificant. For a small
demand increase in phase 1 at node n, the voltage change in phase 1 at node n is
insignificant. Unbalanced power flow (UPF) is first solved on the test model with a
given load profile using EPRIs OpenDSS. To verify calculations a perturbation study
is performed with the IEEE 8500-node model. It has been observed from the method
proposed in this paper that loss sensitivity of a nodal load increases with the loading
of network, the loads distance from the substation, and degrading power factor.
The method proposed in this paper could be good start for implementation of
market-based pricing strategies in the distribution system where accurate loss
sensitivity calculation is very important.
