HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA

PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS
BOBBY LEE

AGE

The opening sequence for my film, Dark Obsessions, conforms

to the stereotypical negative representations of todays youth.
This is also evident in the film, Attack the block, as they also
portray young people as quite dangerous and loud to the
target audience. Despite not a lot happening in the opening I
created, my media product conforms to this stereotype in the
sense that the female antagonist in my film is a murderer. The
demographic for the target audience of my media product
would be mainly young people but in general it would appeal
to anyone belonging to an avid/cult audience. Therefore it
would make sense to advertise to both my primary and
secondary target audience through things like social media as
this is something essential in their day to day lives.

GENDER
Unusually the antagonist in the thriller film I created is a
female, subverting the dominant ideology that the antagonists
within psychological thrillers are usually men. The female in
my media product is portrayed as having a sense of power or
dominance over the male characters, conflicting against the
idea of a patriarchal society where men rule. Another film
which subverts the dominant ideologies of men being the
stronger gender is War Of The Worlds where Tom Cruise is
depicted as vulnerable and scared like the male characters in
my film when the antagonist comes for them. This may appeal
to a female audience as they might feel empowered as
opposed to the men who are portrayed as the inferior gender.

ETHNICITY
In the film Dark Obsession the antagonist is a
physcopathic white-American teenage girl who seeks
revenge on her old high school bullies. From the
perspective of a judgemental individual this could
lead to the audience generalising this negative
representation to white-Americans in general. This is
obviously not always the case but it is a possibility.
This negative representation of young white females
is also present in the TV series Pretty Little Liars as it
has been revealed that the mysterious antagonist
belongs to this ethnicity/race.

SOCIAL CLASS
The social class of the characters within
my film are middle class people who
doesnt struggle finacially. Therefore the
problems that arise within my film
subvert against the stereotype that only
lower class people with not alot of money
live unhappy lives. It also connotes how
in actual fact money can not buy
happiness.
