There are 8 basic rules of arranging flowers.

They are as follows:

Scale: to judge the height, width & length of the arrangement according to
the container used.
Balance: the use of larger flowers at the base of the arrangement.
Properly aligning props.
Focus: to make a statement in one general area. Usually found in the
front center of a one-sided design.
Texture: incorporating various components such as grasses, pods,
smooth, rough etc.
Rhythm: allowing the flowers to flow in one direction. Can be achieved by
using flowers and/or props.
Harmony: my personal favorite. If you are a beginner, harmony can be
best achieved by using the same color span throughout the entire
arrangement. This is called monochromatic, or using varying shades of
the same color.
Color: the understanding of the color wheel. The use of interior design
and bridging the two to become one.
Design: a design can be planned ahead for a particular container, or
area. A design may become interpreted during the arranging process

.
Color, Harmony And Balance:
Here is an example of achieving the three.
The room:
Mauve, slate blue, white, and sage green.
The furniture:
Cherry wood entertainment center.
Rosewood loveseat & 2 rosewood chairs.
Floral accent rug complementing floors & leaves.
The location:
Dining room table....oval
Chandelier 27" from center of table.
Dining room directly adjacent to parlor.
Color, harmony & balance...
Gray Victorian urn with carved cherub detail.
Mauve peonies, open roses of burgundy, pale pink alstromeria, gray/blue
Eucalyptus, & sage green long hydrangea.
White babies breath for filler.
Blending colors, textures, & sizes = balance. The room dictates soft,
natural lines.

Choosing a container:
Container styles may range from Victorian urns To Grecian planters , wicker
baskets to your favorite Lenox piece or Wedgwood vase.
A project begins by choosing an idea.
What room will it go in?
Will it go against a wall?
Under a painting?
On a sofa or dining table?
Is it for you or for a friend?
What are the primary colors in the room?
The carpet? The fabrics? The wood?
Style of home or room? Country? Traditional? Oriental? Victorian?
After careful consideration...you must decide: A location, a style,
colors...and then a container.
