available. The Economist offers
insight and opinion on international
news, politics, business, finance,
science, technology and the
connections between them. If you
would like a school year subscription
to the Economist, 15 for issues
through June, please bring the
subscription fee by October 12th.

National Engineering Competition
for Girls
Open to all HS girls
Talent 2030's National Engineering
Competition for Girls is a free
competition for girls aged 11-18.
The competition aims to inspire
girls to pursue careers in
engineering and manufacturing
and invites them to solve major
challenges of the 21st century.
Girls can enter individually or in
groups of up to 6. Competition
opens on 28th of September 2015,
closes on December 18th. For
support with your entry
contact Ms Herschleb to get
information about times and
locations of support sessions.

UKMT Senior Math Challenge


Open to all HS students
This year the UKMT Senior Math
Challenge- open to all high school
students- is going to be on
Thursday, November 5th, during
the school day. If you are
interested or would like more
information about the challenge,
please contact M s Herschleb or
stop by room HS301. Try this
problem from last years challenge:
Kate has three times the number of
cherries that Lionel has, and twice
the number of cherries that
Michael has. Michael has seven
more cherries than Lionel. How
many cherries do Kate, Lionel and
Michael have altogether?

Rotary International Public


Speaking Competition
Open to all HS students
This public speaking competition is
an opportunity for students to
work in teams of three to develop
a speech on a chosen subject and
follow a specific procedural
protocol for delivery. This is a great
opportunity for students to
practice both public speaking skills
and teamwork. Applications must
be submitted by October 16th, the
first round of the local competition
will be held on November 17th.
Interested teams of three should
see Ms Herschleb for d etails of the
competition and the application.

Although its only October, its time to start thinking about the novel you can write
in just one month with the support of National Novel Writing Month.
What can you do to get started? You can begin today with the following two steps:
1.) Make a commitment. Intention is everything. Decide now you will write a novel
in November and begin the steps (including registering online at nanowrimo.org)
2.) Get some help from the experts and review the online prep resources.
