Dividing Decimals by a Whole Number

Mrs Southern has 0.9 of a pizza. She is splitting it between three students. How much of the
pizza does each student get?
1. Represent your larger factor.

2. You are going to split your 0.9 into 3 groups.

3. In each group, there are 0.3 (3 tenths). So, my answer is 0.3

4. RACE: Each student will get 0.3 of the pizza. I knew to divide because she was sharing the
pizza between 3 students. First, I started with 0.9 because that is how much pizza I have. Next, I
split the 0.9 into 3 groups. In each group, there are 3 tenths (0.3).

Dividing Decimals by a Decimal

Mrs. Southern has $1.36. She wants to give each student $0.34. How many students can she
give money to?
1. Make groups of 0.34 (3 tenths and 4 hundredths) until you get 1.36.

2. I have a total of 4 groups of 0.34 so my answer is 4.

3. RACE: Mrs. Southern can give 4 students money. I divided because Mrs. Southern was
sharing money with students and she needed to know how many groups (students). First, I
shaded 0.34. I alternated colors so that I could see my different groups. I stopped shading
once I got to 1. 36.
