Requiem for YIT, Zewaka, Htee Koe Latt and Thamine Campus
Kyi Thar
(1)
My friend, let me tell you the story of some important parts of my life.
Twenty years ago, it was a day before the school year started, (11/26/1995), I
arrived at Zewaka, my hostel. I still remember how excited I was. My heart was
beating fast thinking of how I would create newest, brightest future for myself.
Except some information I gathered from my senior students and two songs such
as Takkatho Kyaung Ka Ngwela Min and Mya Kyun Nyo Nyo I memorized about
college life just before diamond jubilee of Yangon University, I knew nothing. I was
just a village boy.
My friend, I want to talk about what happened on the way to university.
There were university students spending their time together playing poker on the
ship from Wakema to Yangon. I was with my uncle who was sending me to the
university. As I knew my uncle would not like of any form of gambling, I stayed
away from the group when my uncle was not asleep. But at night, when he went to
bed, I could not help myself. So, I went and played the poker with the spending
money my parents gave me for my first month in university (3000 kyats).
Unfortunately, I lost half of it. I gambled blindly the remaining half in one stroke,
then I won again. Essentially, I lost half, I won back, I lost half again and so on for
four of five rounds. I was lucky that at the end, I had exactly the same amount I
started. I was thinking, if ever the house take all in any of the round, I would have
to pack up and go back home. I guess as my karma had it, I got all my money to
start my journey to the forest of trouble and happiness, my life as a college student.
My friend, after my uncle left me at the hostel, I cleaned my room and made
friends with a gang of students from Pegu from neigboring rooms. They were Min
Min (who would become famous as Boeboegyi), Thant Zaw Lwin, Maung Maung
Myint Soe, Aung Soe Lin from Latputta, Saw Myat Aung from Sittwe, Aung San
Htwe from Hinthada, Zaw Myo Lwin from Kyauk Tan, so on. In the evening, we all
decided to go to Innya lake. When we came down from the hostel for the walk, the
guard stopped Saw Myat Aung, as he thought he was illegally transpassing the
hostel. When Saw Myat Aung arrived at the hostel in the morning, he had tied his
hair up and put a hat on. But when he came down that evening he let his hair
down. So, the guard did not recognize him and thought that he was a thug
transpassing the hostel. We all had to vouch for him. That was my very first
remembrance.
My friend, the second thing I remember is the trip to RC-2 (Regional College
2) by the residents of Zewaka two days later. We purposely went there by a bus. We
98

knew that we needed to take No. 45 or No. 50 bus to RC-2, it would be three stops
(from Innlay hostel - our bus stop, next stop Arr Kasar (Gym), then Ingin, and
finally Kyaung Kawe) from our hostel. Therefore, after school, instead of alighting
at Innlay stop, we continued to Kaung Kawe stop. We came into RC-2, looked at all
the latest fashion of Yangon at RC-2 and visited everywhere at very new University
of Computer Science. After we visited all the places, we came out from the back
entrance. Then we were hoping to meet some more beautiful girls near their hostels
there. Note that hostels in Myanmar are segregated between male and female
students. One of my friends said that, the hostel just in front of us looked so much
similar to our hostel. I pretended to be Mr. Know-it-all and told everyone that all
the hostels were built with the same design. I said, As our hostel is three stops far,
it cannot be ours. Then, we continued walking towards that hostel and then we
saw our guard at the entrance. Then we looked up the name on the sign and it said
Zewaka. We all looked at each other and could not stop laughing. How ignorant we
had been!
(2)
My friend, let me tell you about our daily life. Everyday, we ate hostel food
and ran for the school. I still remember our lecturer, Daw Aye Hla, who taught us
assumptions and X, Y coordinate systems and we learnt to express our world in
terms of Physics. I still remember how my head span from learning to solve
differentiate and integrate of Math 101 and 102 problems. When the time up bell
rang, we ran for No. 50 and 45 buses, holding barely to the bus to get back to the
hostel.
My friend, as soon as I got back to the hostel, the first thing we did was
running to the small table at the entrance of the hostel, really hoping that Mr.
Postman may have brought a letter or two for us. Every time I saw my name on a
letter, I felt so overwhelmingly happy about that. There was nothing compare to
that. More than letters from my parents and friends, I was the happiest to see pink
envelopes with my name on it. I could not decide whether I should open it before
shower or after shower, as I wanted to open it and quickly read it but still did not
want to finish reading this pink letter. At that moment, my whole world seemed so
perfect with the flowers were blooming, the breeze was cooling, the sun was shining
and everyone was smiling. I felt like I was at the top of the world.
My friend, lets continue to talk about hostel food. Our wonderful food
options were two small red colored meat which we called pork curry or very small
99

piece of ocean fish curry in water (not in oil) or half an egg or chickpea soup.
Everyday the hostels dining room treated us with one of those options day and
night. If I lost my money at poker, or if the money my parents sent to me had not
arrived, I had no choice but to have them to assuage my hunger and to give myself
some strength. Lucky for me, the parents of my friend, Pegu Boeboegyi, sent food
continuously for their son and he would share them with me. I still thinking of
jackfruit seed curry with lots of oil they sent.
My friend, I would like to tell you a short story about how I got into trouble
due to taking two portions of curry. As the food at the hostel was so bad, most of
the hostel residents did not take the food. Therefore, there were a lot of food left.
So, business minded workers at the kitchen used to sell those extra to neighboring
places for extra pocket money. So, they felt very cross at the students who dare to
take two portions of curry. One day I took two portions and sat at the table to start
my meal. One of the kitchen workers came with a book and asking me to sign as I
took two portions in front of all the students in the dining hall. Even though a lot of
the seniors took two portions, they never asked them. But he asked me as I was a
freshman and he wanted to intimidate me from taking two portions. I was very
embarrassed and I told him that We will see at 7 pm. That was the time he usually
took all the extra food out of the kitchen with his bicycle to sell them outside for
profit. My plan was to catch him in the act and to bring this up for justice. At 6:30
pm, I got a letter from the warden of the hostel, U Mya Tin Oo. He requested me to
come to see him. The warden tried to talk me out of doing anything serious. He
explained to me that the workers were relying on the good will of the students. The
worker who asked me to sign was so frightened by my threat and he did not dare to
leave the kitchen. Since this event, even if I only took one portion of the curry, that
worker would bring an extra portion to my table.

My friend, let me tell you about how we spent our evenings in Thamine
campus. I cannot omit Htee Koe Latt (nine umbrellas) market in this story. This is
the place where we bought anything and everything we needed for our day to day
life. We could copy lecture notes there, we could buy food items such as eggs, rice,
oil, red bull and we could also buy books and pens. The market had a strange
name and the design of the building was strange as well. Depending on our budget,
we went there to get our essentials. If we went early, we could also enjoy making
eyes at those beautiful female hostel residents, who came for shopping.
100

My friend, when the sun was down and all the female hostels were locked
down, Thamine campus became our little private world for males only. We all took
post in front of Gandama (mums), Tharaphi, Hninsi (rose), Ingin and Khatta female
hostels, where Economy and YASU (Yangon Art and Science University) students
live, to start our entertainment programs. There were at least three groups of
entertainers in front of each of these hostels at a time. On the other hand, there
rarely were anybody playing guitar in front of the Thazin (orchid) hostel, where YIT
female students lived. The lovely thing is that we all took in turn singing and
playing guitar without needing any arrangement or any argument between groups
every night. Looking at lovers window from afar and singing love songs for the
intended one, it seemed that the whole Thamine campus was filling up with love at
that moment. She would turn off the light and stood just behind the curtain to
listen to our music. Seeing the shadow of her, the knowledge of her probably
listening to our song would bring so much joy to me. Even though we were far
apart physically, I felt that our minds were very close to each other.
My friend, I still remember how we made phone calls to our love ones in
those days. There were no private cell phones at that time. In Thamine campus, we
had two types of public phones. The old ones were where we had to put in coins
and the new card phones which were put in after diamond jubilee of Yangon
University. One unit of the phone card cost two kyats. There were two levels of
phone cards: 100 kyats for 50 units and 200 kyats for 100 units. Our hostel had
the card phone system, but it was situated in the TV room and we could not really
talk freely. Therefore, we would climbed into the back gate of RC-2 and walked to
the card phones near Lin Myaw Gone (a mound where a woman would be waiting
and expecting for her husband). In those quiet and dark nights, we could not finish
talking to each other. The only reason we had to stop was when we were running
out of money in the card. I still remember that calling to Pathein would be 35
seconds per unit.

My friend, in the evening, when the school was out, Zewaka hostel became
lively and vibrant with the noise of the students. Some were playing checkers or
chess, some were watching whatever shows playing on TV in TV room, some would
go to hostel library to borrow books, some were playing guitar at the hostel veranda
with friends. In hostel bedrooms, some were studying very hard, while others are
discussing about politics, economy, etc. Then, there were those who were working
diligently on love letters. We also had people who would distribute illegally copies of
101

the tape of Htun Eindra Bo and Myo Kyawt Myaing. Unsurprisingly we also had
some who were gambling. My friend, as you see, each room had their own group of
people with their own interest.
My friend, around 8:00 pm, when the dining room was closed, Chinese
movies had over and news was broadcasting on TV, some gentlemen from Innlay
hostel would come to Zewaka, to find the brave ones to go with them for their
battle. Then that group would go to Sintgu hostel to collaborate with lionhearted
soldiers there. After all of us, protectors of the Thamine campus were ready, we
would go and do our enormous responsibility as a member of Thamine campus to
push the car.
My friend, the important battle we were fighting is this. Around this time of
the night, near RC-2 and Innya lay lake, there were many cars which used the
shadow of the night to do illegal things such as kissing, spending time with their
lovers, etc. Those were the time, when people put stickers on the car to get some
privacy. Our brave soldiers would frighten all those couples by pushing their cars,
removing car numbers, etc. It seems very rough and ugly but we gave an excuse to
ourselves that we were protecting the purity of Thamine campus. Once we even
tried to catch a couple who were hiding in the long grass between Zewaka and
Sintgu. Thinking it back, I still felt sorry for how we had frightened this couple.
Even though I still remember in detail, can we not talk about it my friend?
My friend, every year, each hostel had Annual Dinner and those were the
very happy time for all of us. Hostel would also publish magazine posters around
the same time. We all would go and read them. Before the dinner, there were sound
tests of the singers from the hostel. I still remember the way Saw Myat Aung sang
heavy metal song. Famous musicians would also come to the dinner and
entertained us. I went to all the hostels Annual Dinner to hear these musicians. I
still remember Shwe Than Sin, Lazy Club, Twenty five minutes song sang by Tun
Tun, Bo Bos Ta khar ka rock & roll, Si Thu Lwin, Si Yan, Poe Dali Thein Tan, Mi
Mi Win Pe, Ringo and Kabyar Byawe Muu. Other schools such as University of
Economy had two different gender hostels paring up as brother-sister hostels. Each
pair of hostels celebrated their dinner together. For us, YIT, there were only one
women hostel with five men hostels in Thamine campus. So, we did not have those
type of pairing. So, the only thing we could do was being jealous at those with luck.
My friend, when I talk about Thamine campus, I cannot leave out a little
shop where they sell Ei Kyar Kway. Ei Kyar Kway or You Tiao is a type of Chinese

My friend, 1996 student uprising was the first historical student movement
after 1988 uprising which shook the throne of the Junta. It was also the movement
which would change the path of our lives. While the school was closed down by the
military government, some started business and some worked as tutors for high
school students. As you know, we all had to start learning the way of the world and
working for our livelihood even if we were not fully equipped for that.
My friend, I started working as a tutor in my hometown. At the beginning of
the year of 1998, I became a study guide at ACA Educational Boarding school. By
1997, our school YIT (Yangon Institute of Technology) was moved to Ministry of
Science and Technology and renamed it as YTU (Yangon Technological University).
Instead of reopening the school for engineering students, it was used as short term
evening training school. We were ignorant about how Junta had planned to
decimate our engineering school due to us, engineering students being very active
in politics at that time.
My friend, in 1998, engineering school was reopened for one level at a time.
Final year level was opened for ten days (ten days of attending classes, five days of
learning and one week of exam for a year worth of education). Then, fourth and
fifth years were reopened. After that, in the middle of August, first, second and
third years were reopened. I was very happy that I was back at the shade of
Zewaka hostel. As a second year student, the result of this exam would decide
which engineering major I would be eligible for. I planned to work very hard to get
into the engineering major I wanted.

My friend, but just after I arrived at the hostel and went down to get the
schedule, I realized that our school schedule had been shortened. Government had
reduced the school opening days by seven days out of existing plan of ten days. The
reason was they wanted to make sure that no engineering school would be opened,
when NLD (National League for Democracy) party started their rival congress. My
friend, I was so devastated. We were only a pawn which they did not mind letting it
go in their political game. It seems that education of future leaders of the country
did not seem to matter much to the military government.
My friend, we fought hard to get back at least to the same length of school
opening time as we had. My friend, I do not remember everything in detail. So, I will
tell you as far as I remember. We started our meeting at the small ground between
Sintgu and Ruby hostels. Then, it was moved to room number 130 where Aung San
Htwe and Min Min stayed. By the way, at that time, Thant Zaw Lwin and I stayed
in room 128. As we were meeting without the knowledge of the warden of the
hostel, we locked the door from outside and got into room 130 one by one
surreptitiously through the veranda. One of us had to be in look out to signal us if
there was some teachers passing through the corridor. Students from all the
hostels came to the room. There were so many people in the small room that if
someone passed through the corridor in front of the room, we could feel the
warmth on our foot.
In short, my friend, hostel students and day students whoever wanted to
participate signed the letter requesting to put the exam date back as previous
schedule. If I remember correctly, the demand we had in 1998 is not related to any
political view and purely for the right to education.
My friend, after we got almost everybodys signature, I believed the date was
30/August/1998, we went to the Rector, U Nyi Hla Nge, to present our case. What
U Nyi Hla Nge said was that we should not even think of starting any movement or
uprising as he had given full power to military to squash us if we left outside of the
school. We could not believe what he said. My friend, I really missed former Rector
U Kyin Soe, who worked so tirelessly to protect us from getting into big trouble at
1996 uprising. U Kyin Soe had retired due to our uprising and now we were in the
hand of Maung Thar Soe (a person who was worse than the one before).
My friend, as I felt so bad, I stood up and asked him respectfully. Dear
Sayargyi, I saw that there are a lot of advertisements for diploma giving evening
training school. If the school can be used to open more and more evening training
classes like that, but why are we getting throw out of our school so fast. He replied
104
Requiem for YIT, Zewaka, Htee Koe Latt and Thamine Campus

angrily that we should not say anything bad about those training classes as that is
the way school is making money and thanks to that the school can pay more salary
to teachers. The amount of money school got from teaching engineering students is
quite insignificant. He said our tuition fess is less than the cost of two cups of tea.
So, I told him that allegorically we, engineering students are the owner of the house
and evening diploma classes are just temporary guests. It seemed that the guests
were put in the best room in the house and we were kicked out of the house. I told
him that it did not seem to be appropriate way to do it. He became so angry and left
the room.
My friend, next day, U Thaung (the sitting minister) came to school to
discuss with the students. In 02/Sept/1998, engineering students started the
protest. That day, while I was protesting, I became very hungry and went to the
canteen with Maung Maung Myint Soe. On the way there, I was bitten by a very
small snake on the steps. The snake was very small and it was small scratch on my
instep of my foot. The snake ran into the rocks after biting.
My friend, we went to Registrar U Than Sein to tell him about the situation.
As military had totally closed off the school, it took a while to get a permission to
leave the premises. After getting the permission, they sent me to Insein hospital
with an employee in an E2000 car. On the way to the hospital, I also had to meet
up with lieutenant commander of Yangon division, Thura Myint Maung and military
intelligence (MI) who were stationing at the BPI street.
My friend, after arriving at Insien hospital, I was put into private room.
Different groups of military intelligence came and measure the wound. As the
wound became smaller and smaller with time, they became suspicious in my story.
They left a doctor in my room to test my blood every hour for coagulopathy. Some
of the snake bites could cause coagulopathy, a condition in which the blood ability
to clot is impaired.
My friend, the next morning, the lady doctor, who was the head of the
hospital, came to my room alone before her round without her entourage. She told
me that one of her sons was a mining student at YIT and she felt sorry for me as
her own child. It seemed that none of the MIs seemed to believe in my story and
she wanted to make sure I did not get into trouble. Therefore, she would like to
write a prescription saying that I did have problem and needed anti-venom when
she made her round. Then she left my room. After a few minutes, she came with
her group. Somebody from MI came with her. The doctor said as my blood was not
clotting after 7 minutes, and she thought I had coagulopathy. She said because of
105
Requiem for YIT, Zewaka, Htee Koe Latt and Thamine Campus

that they needed to give me anti-venom right away. Even though I had no problem
from snake bite, I was given anti-venom unnecessarily. The medication made very
bad smell in my mouth and nose. In the evening, my hostel warden U Mya Tin Oo
came to the hospital and asked the military intelligence. He said I saw that my
students room is locked and guarded. Does it mean he is arrested? MI said that I
was not. So, he told the MI that he was going to take me back to my residence in
Zewaka hostel, and took me back to my room with his yellow Toyota publica car
after meeting with the head doctor of the hospital. I am very grateful for their help.
(6)
Thanks to the warden of Zewaka hostel, I was back at my room on
03/Sept/1998. As the exam was in seven days, I decided to let it go and prepare for
the exam. Thamine campus was surrounded by SWAT team. I did not realize that
this would be my last night at Zewaka, where I started my life as an engineering
student with hopes and expectation for my future, where I made friends and
enjoyed comrade, and matured into an activist for the right of education (even if it
was for 10 days).
Next day, 04/Sept/1998, around noon, my mother came to my hostel. She
was holding a telegraph letter. She got this letter from Wakema MI at 9pm the night
before. MI was advising her that she needed to pick me up immediately from
Yangon. That night, the last ship from Wakema to Yangon had left. She requested
to let her pick me up next day. But they would not accept her request and put her
by force onto Wakema - Pathein ship and made her take Pathein - Yangon bus. My
mother had never traveled to Yangon before and this was her first time in the city
due to my problem. As she was not used to take long bus drive, she had fatigue
and was throwing up the whole time.
After my mother arrived, within 5 minutes, I got the letter from the hostel
that I needed to clean out of there immediately. I put all my things together in a
hurry and left Thamine campus on a taxi tricycle. At the corner of Innlay hostel, I
saw Rector, U Nyi Hla Nge resting under the shade of the tree. I became angry
seeing him. Therefore, I went to him and asked why I was punished this way. He
said that it was because I argued with him. My friend, he must be the one I hate
most in my life. Even though he is highly educated and working as a teacher, he
does not seem to have any qualities of a teacher. Our teachers educated us,
encouraged us, helped us to find the right way in life and protected us. They
treated us their own flesh and blood. It seems that he had none of them.

Any way, when I got to Oak Kyin street, I sweetly talked my mother into
leaving me at Yangon and going back home. Then I went and stayed at the hostel
across from Nawarat Hotel. I lived there for a few days when I was taking my first
year exams. I felt that I died from heaven and reborn at hell.
That evening, I went to Thamine junction to have dinner. Due to stress, I
could not eat much. I tried to study but I could not concentrate either. Sitting at
Insein and Parami junction, I could not stop worriedly looking at SWAT team
blocking Thamine campus. I called Min Min who went back to Pegu. He encouraged
me not to worry and he said that he would be back tomorrow and we could stay at
the same place.
On the morning of 5th of September, Maung Maung Myint Soe and Min Min
came back from Pegu. Thant Zaw Lwin and Myo Min Oo left the school hostel with
their own volition. All of them came and got me and we all moved to Maung
Maungs uncles distillery located at Insein Pauk Taw Wa. We lived together in the
attic of the distillery. Whenever I am in trouble, I always seem to have people who
help me from my dismay. At that time, without Maung Maungs help, I might have
to go back to my town and would not have opportunity to finish my second year
exam.
Maung Maungs uncle arranged food, drink and everything we needed for us.
We all studied hard the whole day. I also got the information that I needed to take
my exam at the Insein GTI instead of YIT. I also needed a guardian to come with me
to the exam. I got help from my teacher U Aye Han who I worked with in ACA
boarding school. He came with me us my uncle every single day for my exam.
The whole SWAT team was guarding the Insein GTI. Many MIs were there as
well. Twenty seven students took their exams there. When we finished the exam,
Professor U Ba Myint, who is the second in command at YIT, came to GTI and told
us to be peaceful and that he would take care of everything. Later, we realized what
he meant by taking care of everything. Essentially he was taking care of sending all
of us to prison very soon.
Any way, I have something to boast. I did very well in my second year exam
and I was moved from roll no.171 to roll no. 96. Hey U Nyi Hla Nge, I won!

Around 1998 October 20, our second year grades were out. After one week I
went back to Wakema. After I got back, I continued teaching as private tutor. After
working the whole week, on 01/Nov/1998, there were no classes that night, I went
to see a movie at a friends theater.
Soon after the movie started, a friend of mine came into the theater in a
hurry. He was totally out of breath. He told me that military intelligence were
looking for me everywhere. They planned to arrest me and sent me to Yangon. He
said that if I wanted to run, he would get me a small engine boat. I told him that I
did not want to run. But I asked him to help me to find U Myint Swe as I wish to
get his advice. U Myint Swe is my friend who I respect and trust as an uncle. He
owns saw mills and he has connection with police and people in power. U Myint
Swe suggested that I should go with the MIs. If I ran, it would complicate more for
my family. He would try his best to protect me from police and military intelligence.
He did not want them to come and arrest me by force at home and contacted them
to wait for me at the jetty.
I came back home and packed some clothes. My mother was teary and gave
me 3000 kyats. U Myint Swe brought me to the jetty with his motorcycle. At the
jetty, one policeman and one MI were waiting and board the ship with me. They did
not really explain to me where they were taking me to. They said something like
Student Affair at Yangon or to a military station. I was put up in a private room in
style. As I had no clue what future hold me, I tried to make sure I slept fully to be
ready. On the ship, the police treated me well due to U Myint Swe. They did not
lock me up and I had freedom on the ship. I met one of my neighbors on the ship
and he asked me where was I heading to. I told him that I was arrested and he at
first thought that I was joking.
We arrived at Yangon on 02/Nov/1998. That was Tazaungtine full moon day.
The recording of famous singer Zaw Win Htut, Say Paung Kha Te` Nya was out on
that morning. MI was negotiating the taxi fare with a taxi driver and they did not
seem to be agreeing on a price. Then I saw taxi driver driving behind MI and told
him that he would be fine with 500 kyats for Insein prison. When I heard that, I
had a realization that they were going to put me in infamous Insein prison and my
anxiety shot up.

After the taxi ride, we arrived at Insein prison. Insein prison has a smaller
private prison in the premises. We went in through two huge doors which is called
Htaung Bu Wa (the main gate of the prison). They asked me to take off watch,
money, backpack and recorded them. They also searched my whole body and wrote
down three distinct markings such as scars and moles. These markings will be
used to identify a person when he/she is free. After that, the prison warden pointed
to a place and asked me to go and sit. When I tried to sit down on a seat near
where he pointed, he shouted me and said that he was ordering me to sit on the
floor, not on the seat. I was humiliated and felt very small and insignificant. But I
tried to control myself to pretend that I was ok.
Soon, somebody came to me with a white bag which looked like a big pillow
case and covered my face. I could not see anything and I felt like I got disconnected
from the world. Then I heard the door opened. They asked me to stand up, walked
to the left for ten steps, to the front for five steps, turned to the right for 45 degree
and walked for three steps then asked me to jump over the drainage of two feet and
so on. (There was no drainage in that area. They just asked me to test whether I
followed their command and to test whether they could control me as they wished.)
This way, they brought me into a building.

When I entered inside, they took off the head cover, wrapped my eyes with
black cloth and tied it at the back of my head. The interval between the head cover
took off and eyes wrapping was very fast. I could not have a chance to see anything
but experiencing only a sudden brightness. After a while, they started questioning
me. I had to sit with four legged seat which was so high that I could not touch my
feet to the ground. The wooden plate on the legs was about five inches square with
sharp edges. The four legs were purposely made not to be in the same height so
that it would not be stable while sitting. I felt like feather in the wind sitting on the
unstable seat with feet not touching to the ground. My butt was hurting because of
the sharp edges too. I guessed I was being started questioning at about 10 am.
There were a variety of questions continuously being asked. I was also
threated to be thrown into deep canyon if I did not answer correctly. I tried to calm
down myself quickly from being my mind disordered due to anxiety and fear. My
whole body was sweating and sweat drops were dripping down from my body. I
organized my mind in order to recognize the previous answers to be able to connect
to the next answers since the answers were all connected. Under the wrapping
cloth, the interrogator could not see my eyes which was good for me to recognize
and answer the questions. I memorized the previous answer and repeated exactly
the same answer when they asked the same question again. I answered the
questions by resembling myself in my mind as a simple student whose priority was
to be a top one during his education journey. And he had been doing things
wrongly due to uncontrollable mind.
The interrogator changed hourly. They asked about my childhood, my dating
as a teenager and boycotting. I was the only one answering all those questions
although the interrogators were changing one after another. I got to know that they
were interrogating other students too. During the interchange period between the
two interrogators, there was no napping or resting time for me. I had to sing
instead. I was not allowed to drink water but I was allowed to urinate if I needed to.
I had to follow the instruction to go for urinating, to walk three steps forward and
turn right to 90 degree then uncover the sarong to urinate.
In late evening, they took off the head cover and took a photo of me holding
the signboard written as Aung Thu Htoon (father) U Kyi Htoon in front of my chest.
I was inside a small room with faded light on. The recent interrogator with a
powerful voice was seen as a short and fat man who looked alike our Myanmar
110
Requiem for YIT, Zewaka, Htee Koe Latt and Thamine Campus
child actor Aung Tun Lay. Even though I was upset upon my situation, I wanted to
laugh by seeing him. They gave me water to drink at that night. I had melsaliphu
salad inside the prison but I had vomited due to its extremely bitter taste.
(Melsaliphu means the young buds from one kind of tree which was picked up from
the tree, boiled in water and made into salad with other ingredients.)
I was interrogated for 13 hours and 30 minutes, starting from 10 am to next
morning 1:30 am. I was nearly fainted after the interrogation. After interrogation, I
was sent to one of the prison cells in hostel No. 2. It was an eight square feet cell
with one wooden bench, a blanket (Sunflower brand), one urine pot made of clay,
two to three water bottles. A yellow colour light bulb (incandescent light bulb) was
dimly lit inside the cell. When I entered into the cell, I had to walk towards the wall
standing and facing the wall without looking back to the entrance. After they locked
up the door and walked out, I remained stood there for a moment and then went to
the wooden bench and laid down there. My whole body was aching at that time. I
was not aware of whether I fell asleep or not on that night by rolling side to side
until the dawn time.
I was frequently interrogated in the following days but the questioning time
was not very long. After interrogation, they sent me back to the cell. I could see
bringing out and sending back the students with head cover in front of my cell. But
I could not see them clearly as I was not allowed to stay near to the entrance door.
If someone passed through my cell, they asked me to stay facing to the wall. They
sent two meals per day, one at about 2 pm and another at about 12 midnight. I did
not have any meal for four days as I did not have any desire to eat and I was not
able to swallow the food. There was only water inside my stomach. I had to lay
down because of stomach ache if I stayed in sitting position. The existing prisoners
came to change the water bottle, bring the urine pot and put the pot back to the
cell. But I was not allowed to talk with them.
At one night, my mother came to me with a smiling face saying she came
here to bring me back home and I could go home with her. By the time I prepared
to go with her delightedly, I suddenly woke up noticing that I was just dreaming.
They locked me up inside the cell like capturing the animal inside the cage. I could
not bear staying inside and so eager to be out of this cell. Once I fell asleep, my
spirit went around to my native town, my friends and my home. Only when I woke
up, I felt the real sense of being inside the prison. I was getting used to stay inside
after staying there for four to five days.
111
Requiem for YIT, Zewaka, Htee Koe Latt and Thamine Campus
It was on the fifth day of my stay in there, I was fed the soup made of sour
leaf and bamboo shoot. I think they were afraid that I would die if I was not eating
anything continuously. Only then I started having meal and it was so delicious for
a starving boy. I felt warm all over my body and comfortable after filling the food
into my empty stomach. On that day, they gave my backpack back to me. I got
back four or five sets of clothing, broken tooth brush without handle and one pack
of jam sandwich that I bought while I was on the ship except cash, watch and other
stuffs which were not allowable to keep with me. I ate the whole sandwich without
leaving any piece of it. Even though it had become mouldy sandwich, I ate it as the
food from heaven.
I was permitted to take shower on seventh or eighth day. It was a night time
when we were taking shower. I got to know who were inside the hostel No. 2 at that
time. There were a total of 19 students from YIT. Six students from our same batch
(second year) who were Aung San Htwe, Aye Min Zaw, Thet Naing Myint, Tin Aung
Myint, Clinton (Sai Kyaw Nyunt) and Kalay Aphay (nick name) who arrived into
prison one week after our arrival. Three students from third year who were Zaw
Gyi, Thura Tun and Big Rooster. Four to five students from first year including
Pyay Ti Oo. There were over ten students from Thanlyin GTI (Government Technical
Institute) but their case was different from ours.
Long and rectangle shaped water storage tank, and the water pump were
located near to the front area of our cells. Each of us had five minutes for
showering. After one person had taken shower and gone inside the cell, then
another one had to come out for showering. The soap provided to us had a very
high content of sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) which caused minor skin burn on
our hand upon long exposure. By using this soap, we had to finish showering as
well as washing clothes within five minutes. Fortunately, I had extra sets of
clothing as I was captured from my hometown and got a chance to bring some
clothes. For some students, they had been captured on the street while they went
out from home to go somewhere such as tea shop. Therefore, they just had one set
of clothing wearing on the body. They had to take shower with naked body because
they needed to wash the one and only set of clothing. After coming back into the
cell, the wet clothing had to hang to dry them up and blanket was the only
wearable clothing to wrap on the body.
Time was passing on and I was getting used to stay in this environment.
Interrogation period was over and the strict controls on us were also lesser than
before. We were now able to communicate from one cell to another. Since the cells
112
Requiem for YIT, Zewaka, Htee Koe Latt and Thamine Campus
were arranged side by side, we could not see each other and we could only
communicate by our voices. One person talked to another person from the adjacent
cell and kept repeating the same method to communicate to other cells. Let me talk
about excrement. Urine pot was used for excretion of stool. There was no toilet
paper provided and I had to tear off the sarong to be used as toilet paper. After I
had been released from the prison, only one half of my sarong was left.
For morning meal, it was boiled butter pea with rice. For evening meal,
mixed vegetables soup without added salt with rice. If I wanted salty flavour, I
could ask for grinded salt or salted fish paste. Military Intelligence (MI) provided
one fried salted fish for evening meal which was the food from heaven for us. We
just ate half of that fried fish and left the other half for the next morning meal. The
plate for having meal was made of aluminium with about one foot in diameter. I
was able to eat more and more gradually as I was starved. Rice was scooped out
with drinking cup made of plastic and placed into the plate. I could finish five cups
of rice for one meal. The existing prisoners being tasked to do things like changing
water bottles for us were good-hearted people. They gave us Myanmar tobacco,
boiled sweet potato, mint leaves etc. They felt pitiful on us as young students.
After spending two weeks alone, I had to change to another cell to stay with
a cellmate. I was with Pyay Ti Oo at Hostel No. 2, Cell No. 21. Although we had
never met before, we had so many things to talk because we had been alone for
quite a long time without having anyone to talk with. We talked since we woke up
until going to bed. At that time, he was trying to be an actor. He was starting to
take part in free shows such as Myanmar language and Myanmar talks and short
television series. We talked about the films, actors, actresses and other
miscellaneous stuffs. He also demonstrated to me with various styles and action
scenes. It was good to have a cellmate but it was not good to stay two persons in
one cell in case of stool excretion matter. It was very smelly if one of us did
excretion early because the stool could be thrown away only when we went out for
taking shower. So we had to find a way to solve this matter. We were able to
estimate the timing for shower because we could only go out for shower one cell
after another. Hence, about twenty minutes before our showering time, one of us
stayed near to the door placing the nose outside the iron fence while one was doing
excretion and we took turn for excretion. Soon after we both had done excretion, it
was our turn to take shower and took our own urine pot to throw out the stool
which we called as releasing fish. Until now, I was having the habit of stool
excretion just before taking shower.

Requiem for YIT, Zewaka, Htee Koe Latt and Thamine Campus
At night time, Clinton (Sai Kyaw Nyunt) used to sing songs. The two most
demanded song were A story from Kutkai town and Mothers face. We all became
silent with shedding tears in our eyes while Shan Gyi (Clinton was from Shan State)
sang the lyric from the song Mothers face which was Mothers face is always
pretty although her hairs become white, her teeth are broken and there are
wrinkles on her cheeks and under her eyes because of getting older. We could not
dare to imagine how our mothers were suffering for us. Would my mother be in
good health without knowing about her son on where he had been brought to and
where had he been? Could my mother be able to sleep by thinking about her son?
Ever since I was dismissed from the Zewaka hostel, the ruling military government
became her enemy for my mother who did not even have any knowledge on political
matters.
May military dictatorship built on many family lives and tears disappear as
long as the world exists.
(9)
Later days in the cell were just normal. This was the time we were waiting
for the judgement while the reports from interrogations were submitted to the
government. When the prison doctor came to inquire whether someone needed
medical treatment in the morning, almost all of us went out to see the doctor with
the same reasons of wanting to be out of the cell as we had been locked up and to
request Vitamin C tablets. It had mild sour taste when we suck on Vitamin C tablet
which we ate it as candy in the prison.
There were two existing prisoners who refilled our water bottles in our cells.
Both of them were ex-military men. One was a sergeant who was imprisoned
because the junior soldier under his command accidently fired a bullet. The other
was a private (soldier) whose crime was having an affair. Both of them were goodhearted. They even brought food and Myanmar tobaccos from other prisoners for
us. Having no expectations, they gave their rare rations to us without eating them
for themselves. I could never forget their generosity. I would always be thankful to
them.
Once in every Thursday, we had to change cell in the late afternoon. In the
first week, I stayed with Pyay Ti Oo and in the second week, I was with Thura Tun
from Myaungmya township who was from Mechanical major in his third year.
114
Requiem for YIT, Zewaka, Htee Koe Latt and Thamine Campus
On Thursday in the third week, I had to change the cell again. This time I
was moved to the front side of Hostel No. 2. I could only see the prison wall
opposite to the water storage tank while I was in the back side of Hostel No. 2.
From the front side, I could see other hostels, main prison, prison entrance,
individual cell made of concrete where Min Theinka, famous fortune teller who
recited Ohn, was detained before and temporary MIs offices. There were foreigners
too in the front side. There were a deserter from Vietnam, four to five people from
China, murderer, human trafficker, people imprisoned with cases related to
Myanmar Immigration Department and others sentenced with various cases.
In the late afternoon, the captain from MI who occasionally chatted with us
came to us. I instinctively asked him whether we would be released. He said yes
and we would be called to their office to be informed about our release. I had ever
experienced about some matters which I did not expect to be happened became real
as I instinctively talked about it. Let those matters in the past. For now, I was very
happy to hear this great news.
After a while, we all were gathered and went to the MI office. When we
arrived there, we were treated with tea and snacks which were placed on the table
with table cloth. They told us that we would be released soon but we had to wait in
the prison for three to four days because they were planning to carry out a
ceremony for our release with our parents whom were already informed to come
here. They also told us that some of our friends would be imprisoned. I then
noticed that Ko Zaw Gyi and Big Rooster from third year, Clinton, Kalay Aphay and
Tin Aung Myint from second year were not with us in the office. We all felt sad and
went back to our cell. I became realize that they moved the students who were
going to be released to the front side and leaving others at the back side of the
hostel for imprisonment.
The time when I felt deeply sorry was the showering time. The students from
the back side were staring at us while we were taking shower as the showering area
was in front of their cells. They seemed to realize their situation too. I could not
dare to look at them eyes to eyes as the MI officers threated us that we would be
sentenced to imprison if we looked at them. I really felt miserable as I could not do
anything for them.
After staying in the prison for 34 days, on 4th December, we had been
released. When we entered to the prison, there were 19 students but only 14 of us
could come out from the prison. While we were out from the prison and boarding
115
Requiem for YIT, Zewaka, Htee Koe Latt and Thamine Campus
on the truck, we all were tearful by singing the song A story from Kutkai town
which Shan Gyi used to sing.
There were many heroes inside Insein prison who scarified their whole life to
revolt the ruling military dictatorship. Some of them had been detained inside the
closed and dark cells without letting them to see the daylight for years. Some of
them were under seriously bad health condition with pale complexion and white
hairs. We had seen many political prisoners from a distance but did not know who
they were. What we had suffered during the detainment period was only training
experience in prison.
Time has been changed. Our beloved rector had also been tolerated with the
sense of house arrest when power battle occurred among the dictators. In the past,
MI was the most fearsome department in Myanmar. Nowadays, the whole MI
department had been dissolved and almost all MI officers had been imprisoned. I
met with the most senior major who interrogated us when I was attending the MBA
course. He said he also had imprisoned for five years. He apologized for what he
had done to us.
My friend, let me finish my story here by talking about the cowards who
once had been in our country. They did not dare to debate and argue about
individuals view and concept with teenagers who were yet to be truly adult. They
felt safe themselves by hurting young people with guns, capturing and locking up
inside the prison. They showed no sympathy and had never given a thought of what
if they were our children.

Think Different
Kyaw Lin Oo
The biggest gift we all get from RIT was a spirit. The spirit made us hungry to learn! It
also made us study hard and play hard (E.g., RC-2)! Especially, it made us Think Different!
As the school has this great history of rebellion (for good) which could shake and make
things up, we all just could feel that we were privileged and special being able to get into the
school.
My first day in RIT was very overwhelming. Everyone around you were just smart,
confident and energetic. Its kinda exciting and intimidating by seeing all smart and bright
people in one place for the first time. All students were smart and unique in either or both!
Sometimes, students could go super excited like kids too. They could also drove our
rector nuts even in the fresher welcome event. Our favourite shouting was Hnarr Bu which
made our teacher nuts!
Im sure if they were given an opportunity to progress, we might have had already done
things like launching rockets to the space.

Kyi Thar
As student, exams were the only biggest challenge I had in life. I am pretty sure
some of us had some form of anxiety before exams especially the ones we are not good
at. This anxiety leads me to nightmares. Even years after I do not need to take any
exams, I still suffer from these nightmares: I am either not prepare for the class due
to some obligations or late for the exam. But sometimes real life event is worse than
nightmare.
This story happened on the first year final for YIT Burmese exam date. I was
not good at taking Burmese exams. It was probably the most difficult subject for me. I
couldn't memorize anything (except traditional songs and poems) and my essay writing
skill was/ is horrible. On top of that I am a slow writer and a perfectionist. Usually I
perfected the first few questions of exams and never had time to finish the end part
of exam where the essay resides. So, I needed as much time as I could get for
Burmese exams. I am a procrastinator and always late for my classes; but never for
Burmese exams.
On that beautiful day, I was quite prepared for my exam. I fulfilled my
checklist for exam preparation: slept well, ate lunch and was in total equanimity. It was
a couple of hours early and I decided to head off to school any way. I told myself that
it was good to be early. Maybe I could review the subject or hung out with friends
before the exam.
So, I started out to the bus station. I needed to take two buses to get to school
and a bus came every 5 minutes. The bus station had only a few people waiting. So, it
looked like a good sign. Just after I arrived a bus came in almost full to the brim and
stopped just in front of me. Some people ran to get in. I decided that I was early
enough and would wait for next bus where there was more room.
The next bus did not come for another 15 minutes and I became a little anxious.
There were a lot of people at the bus stop. Then 3 buses came in competing between
them. One in front of me was totally full with people dangling from exit and the other 2
were reasonable. So, I decided to run to one of the other 2, which was stopped in the
middle of the road. Just before I arrived to the bus, the ticket sale person commanded
the driver to drive, so that they could get more people from next stop. All 3 buses left
225
Kyi Thar
before I could get on any one of them. Then another bus came in 5 minutes with a lot of
dangling passengers and let one of the passengers out. There was no way I could get on
that bus. Then came another one and another one and so on. All of them were too full
that they decided to not stop at our bus stop.
I looked at my watch and I thought that I would barely make it if I could get on
a bus right now. So, I decided to walk (actually to run) to next bus stop which was 10
minutes walk from my bus stop. My instinct was correct. I was at least able to get on a
bus on that stop.
As soon as I arrived at the place to transfer to different bus, I ran out and ran
to next bus station. Unfortunately for me there was a big traffic problem at Hlae Dan
traffic light. I became panicky. After a long wait, I was able to get on to the bus to
school. I told myself it was ok. I would probably get to my exam 5 minutes late if I ran
fast enough.
I tried to meditate on the bus to make myself relaxed. I told myself I could still
do it. I would only need to write faster. I felt relaxed and was ready for the challenge.
Is there any one for BPI? The shouting of the ticket sales person (spare) came
as music to my ears. I was just two bus stops from school. Yay! Suddenly I started
feeling a sharp pain in my stomach. Oh no! My first thought was that I may be able to
hold it until after the exam. But when I arrived at school, I could barely walk. I had no
choice. I had to finish the "business" before the exam.
By the time I got to the exam room it was quite late, and I was barely let in. The
situation was so ironic that I could not stop smiling throughout the exam.
To tell you the truth, this was not the last time I had this type of experience. I
had more like that in US. But none of them can compare to this one.
