The persisting absenteeism a scrutiny

Abstract
Rapid advancement in ICT and other technological developments in academics have transformed
the world into a global village. Everything in academics is becoming globalized and advanced.
Traditional mores and conventions have become obsolete and are only in talks of olden days. But
it is remarkable that teaching styles and course curriculum have registered an insignificant
upgradation with the changing pace. As a result the course-curriculum in-general and particularly
in higher education has become stagnant and monotonous. Students are not able to correlate the
course-curriculum they get themselves registered with their prospective career options. This
eventually results in loss of interest among students towards their education. Reluctance of usage
of new teaching strategies by teachers and educators has worsened the situation. All these are
resulting in students absenteeism. Also, the student absenteeism is rampant in the colleges and
universities due to reasons such as educators instability of tenure. Like that in self-financing or
guest-lectureship makes them reluctant in their performances and on the contrary permanency of
jobs having a virtual performance appraisal results in leniency. Ad-on adversity arises when the
commercial coaching institutions are able to supplement the requirements with their lucrative and
no doubt the prompt service assurances. This very reason results in an inverse relationship
between student absenteeism and course performance.
The problem of absenteeism is precipitated by interplay of a multiplicity of factors which are both
internal and external to the student and or the college. The present paper attempts to cover the
various causes that are responsible for students absenteeism and advocates addressing the
problem in a meaningful way.
Key words: ICT, Absenteeism, teaching-learning environment, course-curriculum, performance
appraisal
