Title
Heightening the Professional Development of Teachers Amidst
Pandemic in the Philippines: A Case Study
Problem
The problem of the research is the different challenges faced by the
teachers through up keeping the learnings of students amidst pandemic
outbreak and leveraging on the continuous development of teachers as the
main provider and driver of learnings in one’s institution by identifying
competencies regardless of circumstances.
Research methodology
The research used a qualitative methods such as surveys, focus group
discussion (FGDs) and interviews. All methods were conducted online with
accordance to Philippine mandate of social distancing. The zoom application
was used for interviews and FGDs and SurveyMonkey and Google Form for
surveys. Participants were mixed of randomly selected teachers and students.
It was intentions to have both parties in order to get balanced perspectives
and avoid bias.
Findings
According to teachers, they feel saddened by students who are
irresponsible and unrespectful. The incomplete facilities of school challenges
to them and to the students especially in public schools that sometimes
causes the students to be less motivated and even demotivated. They are
also challenge by many webinars and the heavy use of technology and digital
tools that causes them stress.
As for students, the challenges that they have experienced and foresee
are the incompetent teachers who lack professionalism, uncondition and
losing passion in teaching.
Conclusion
Philippines are striving still to carry out their mission and vision for the
country for the teachers, parents and specially for the students. The school
somehow sustaining the learning opportunities by webinars that are related to
ICT, focusing on learning how a Learning Management System works or
which application can support teaching and learning process. The way
teachers responded to the interviews left an impression that each school has
their own strategy and ways of dealing with the volatile, uncertain, complex
and ambiguous environment resulting in pursuing their learning passion.
Recommendation
Aligning the responses of teachers and students from the survey and
interviews with volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA)
concept can help schools in heightening the Professional Development of
teachers in the Philippines. It is important to learn students perspective of
competent teachers, understand the challenges and behaviors of students
and visualize altogether the students viewpoint, likewise for the teachers. And,
also, to recheck the current learning, training opportunities for teachers and
revisit the professional development progress for teachers and reimagine and
realign the programs in accordance to teachers, students and VUCA contexts.
