CHAPTER 1

NATURE AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

COVID-19 is a global infection disease and Philippines Educational

System is no exception to the abrupt changes happening now. The module

claimed as one of the effective solutions to keep learning to avoid mass

gathering that possibly causes the virus to spread in school, module

learning employs the use of self learning, These self learning modules are

based on the most essential learning competencies (MELCS ) ,

Department of Education (DepEd) is well aware of the situation between

student , teacher . Due to these changes several concerns have been

raised such as what kind of instruction will be done at home and how will

parents manage their children’s learning. Over the last few months ,the

pandemic has created many challenges for students , teachers and also

parents as they change over to home-based learning.

A modular educational system is one in which the curriculum is

divided into modules. The modules’ components are placed in such a way

that they complement one another. The modular approach is an emerging

trend in educational thinking that shifts traditional methods of instruction

to an outcome-based learning paradigm. Each module provides knowledge

and skills toward proficiency in a field. Modular learning is the current

primary education learning mode in the Philippines, where traditional

teacher-student practice has been moved to mother-child because

mothers are the child’s immediate aides in modular learning. As a result,

they play an important role in their children’s education. According to

Ambayon’s (2020) research, as compared to traditional teaching

strategies, modular education is more effective in the teaching-learning

method since students learn at their own pace. Because working

professionals can learn new skills in shorter lengths of time while still

working, modular learning promotes lifetime learning.

The advantages of modular education system it allows such pupils to

learn at their leisure without disrupting their already hectic routine. After

work, late at night, or on weekends, students can study. They can have a

flexible schedule, study at their own speed, and choose how to complete

all of their assignments. A module system expands the possibilities for

developing projects that deal with remote data processing. Remote

learning can provide significant benefits to students of all types, including

new abilities, more flexibility, learning at their own speed, family time,

and problem solving. Increased home responsibilities, loneliness, and

technical challenges are among the disadvantages. Not all students

complete all of their modules. Some parents spoil their children by

performing the deed on their behalf, Many parents indulge their children

by completing all of the modules on their own. The value of patience

should be instilled in children by their parents. Some parents engage

tutors for their children, who respond to all of the modules. Some

students have a process of copying others’ answers without reading the

module. Students are now technologically savvy, and they have taken
advantage of it. They create their own group conversations and transfer

the answers from one person to the next.

The aim of this research is to know the views or opinions of the

students regarding the modular educational system in Southern city

colleges and to provide information. And give students motivation to study

at the present time.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study focus on the effects of self learning on module educational

systems in southern city colleges specifically it aims to answer the

following questions:

1.How stressful is modular learning for student during COVID-19

pandemic?

2.What is the effect of modular to the student during pandemic?

3.What is one of the reasons why student has a difficulty in adapting

modular in our Educational System?

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of modular

education system whether having a modular system is good or not for

our current students and to know the capacity of implementing modular,

and also to find out if its better than face to face learning. Specifically it

aims to achieve two objectives ;to find out if students are learning
anything in the new learning system and to find out if students have

excessive difficulty with self learning.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Significance of the study are the various sectors as follows:

The Administrator: This will help them to gain knowledge of what they can

share with the student towards proper learning and encourage students to

study well.

The Future researcher: This will be a great significant for the future

researcher they can enlightenment that they will surely need in the future

research studies ,they can easily figure out an information quickly.

The Parents: The research benefits the parents of the children with special

needs. As parents understanding their children on the self learning

module, because of this pandemic and their children are given more

education that would make them a functional individual in the society.

The Students: The direct recipients of the output of this research are the

students with special needs. Any improvement of online module

management technique can pave the way of producing better learning and

discipline to the students in the Society. And it also help student students

behavior , self-esteem and attitude.

The Teachers/Mentors: Through this research, teachers may purposefully

discover how module management is conducive to learning.

This research will be very beneficial for teachers because they can help

the student improve academic success by clearly expressing positive

expectations and teacher can help expressing the students ability and to

be confident.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focuses on the perspective of the students regarding the

self-learning of the southern city colleges students this study is about

what are the Benefits, Limitations and Opinion of the students regarding in

the modular educational system. Which we have sort out and selected the

respondents over thirty (30) students for a survey and we will draw up a

five (5) questions for these students of Science, Technology, Engineering

and Mathematics (STEM) strand. The survey was conducted through Web

surveys it will allow respondents to complete questionnaires that are

delivered to them and captured the voice , perspective and opinion of the

people.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

These are the words used in the research and will give meaning to the

idea of study, for the purpose of clarification the important terms used in

this study have been defined.

MODULAR- The form of individualized instructions that allows learners to

use modules in print or digital format.

PARADIGM- A set of linguistic items that form mutually exclusive choices

in particular syntactic roles.

SELF ESTEEM- Confident in one’s own worth or abilities or self-respect.
