Learning Modalities: Impact and Effects on the Students of Iloilo NHS- SHS
Chapter 1
Introduction
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, many organizations and institutions have been impacted.
One of them is the education system, which resulted to delayed classes and schools are unable to
open until the pandemic has passed. To keep educating learners, finding means to learn on how
to engage with them and continue to educate them is essential. Schools use a variety of teaching
techniques, including online learning, modular learning, and digitized modular learning.
However, since some students live far from schools or are unable to travel, most of them opt for
online or digital modular learning. Aside from that, some learners choose modular learning
because they do not have access to the internet or availability of gadgets for their classes.
Digitized modular learning and online learning is the capacity to study from a virtual platform
with handouts available online. Aside from the delivery of material from the teacher to the
student, digitized modular learning courses are identical to on-campus courses in every way.
While Modular learning is an offline platform wherein the students will received a hard copy of
the modules unlike the digitized modular learning and the online learning. Modular learning is a
form of distance learning that uses Self-Learning Modules (SLM) based on the most essential
learning competencies (MELCS) developed by the teachers with the aid of curriculum
developers. Individualized education is provided using modular distance learning, which allows
students to employ self-learning modules (SLMs) in either print or digital format/electronic
copy, depending on their needs. Other resources such as Learner's Materials, textbooks, activity
sheets, study guides, and other study materials, are available to Modular Distance Learning
students.
As a consequence of the shift to digitized modular learning and modular learning, not only have
teachers had to modify their courses or classes, but students have also had to adjust to a new
learning environment. Students who are adapting to new types of learning modalities face
multiple difficulties while adjusting to a new method of distance learning. Commonly students
are offered 2 types of modalities; first is the digital modality in which students are either given
classes online via zoom, Google meet, or etc. In which, every day they are being assigned
with classes and tasks to do on the same day, On the other hand, some are offered with modular
digital learning, which is similar to modular distance learning but is provided online using
Google Classrooms or other date-sharing platforms and will be submitted on a certain deadline.
The second learning modality can be the modular distance learning, in which the modules are
distributed physically on a specific date and passed on a specified deadline.
Even though the education system adjusted for the pandemic there are many difficulties that
students face in distance learning. Firstly, among students who chose the online modality face
unreliable internet connections and unscheduled power interruptions. Some face bad internet
reception as a result students who chose online modality often can’t pass on the certain deadline
and get trouble for not passing on time. Secondly, the work given to the students are very
tremendous to the learners as a result many learners develop anxieties and stress due to the
workload they experience. The extent to which students are involved with both curricular and
extra-curricular activities is also indicative of their psychological well-being and distress as seen
in qualitative (Buckley & Lee, 2018) with this it indicates that school activities has an effect to
the students well-being in either face to face or distance learning.
At the same time, students who choose modular modality also experience a plethora of
difficulties. One is such, there are issues relating to missing modules like how they can answer
their activities if some part of the modules are missing, as a result many learners are forced to
look to the missing parts of the modules provided online and they will pass their answer sheets to
online platforms in which students can have difficulties relating to connection, especially for
those students who live in remote areas that has a limited or inconsistent connection. Second is,
what if they don’t have any internet or money to buy load for them to pass their projects or
activities online , and it will bring a stress disorder to the students which it can affect their mental
health.
Students, parents, and even teachers' mental health are affected by distance learning modalities.
It is possible that it will worsen for those who already have mental health issues. Parents are
becoming increasingly active in their children’s educational and behaving like educators.
Teachers and professors are working longer hours and are under pressure to offer high-quality
instruction without having to attend face-to-face sessions.
This COVID-19 pandemic presented us with a significant problem. For certain areas, face-to-
face lessons may not be returning anytime soon, and all that must be done now is adjust to the
various challenges.
WORKSHEET #3
What’s the question?
Learning Modalities: Impact and Effects on the Students of Iloilo NHS- SHS
This study was conducted online through the use of interview. This study is
limited only and is mainly focused on grade 12 students of Iloilo National High School. Study
delimitations involve excluding senior high school students who are not grade 12 or students
outside of Iloilo National High School. The intention is only to focus on this school years’ grade
12 students of Iloilo National High School who might experience negative effects like stress and
anxiety because of the work load and pressure from their chosen modality. Another delimitation
is related to the purposive selection of participants. The limitations and delimitations of the study
were done purposefully.
Only grade 12 students from Iloilo National High School are eligible to
participate in this study. Online survey questions are the most used techniques for obtaining data.
The researchers will subsequently be able to assess the impact work load and pressure from their
chosen modality mental of the students.
Presentation of the Statement of the Problem
Instruction:
1. Make a 3-minute recorded video presentation on your statement of the problem and general
specific research questions. Discuss a short background of your study and the reasons why did
you choose that study.
a. Provide a brief background of your presentation by drawing the information from your
background of the study (Maximum of 5 sentences).
