PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION AND DEFINITION

My Research Problem is " EFFECTS OF MODULAR LEARNING ON INTRINSIC MOTIVATION OF BEED

STUDENTS OF NIPSC-BVC IN THIS TIME OF PANDEMIC"

Definition

Modular learning is a form of distance learning that uses Self-Learning Modules (SLM) based on
the most essential learning competencies (MELCS) provided by DepEd. The modules include sections on
motivation and assessment that serve as a complete guide of both teachers' and students' desired
competencies.( Manlangit, Paglumotan & Sapera , 2020) In this Research, Modular learning refers to an
educational methods of instruction that are using by BEED Students in NIPSC-BVC, in this time of having
no face to face classes. Intrinsic motivation is the act of doing something without any obvious external
rewards. You do it because it's enjoyable and interesting, rather than because of an outside incentive or
pressure to do it, such as a reward or deadline (Legg, 2019). For this research, Intrinsic motivation refers
to a learning behavior of the students where they have the will to learn not to gain external reward but
rather they are doing it because it is enjoyable, interesting, challenging and for them to gain personal
satisfaction. Bachelor of Elementary Education Students (BEED) are those students who are taking a
four-year degree program designed to prepare them to become primary school teachers (University.ph
2020). In this research BEED students serves as the
respondents of this research problem where the participants of each section was selected thru a simple
random sampling, all BEED respondents who are choosen are going to answer few questions for
gathering data's. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is defined as illness caused by a novel
coronavirus now called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2; formerly called
2019-nCoV), which was first identified amid an outbreak of respiratory illness cases in Wuhan City, Hubei
Province, China. (Medscape, 2019) In this research, Covid 19 Pandemic are the biggest issues and
problems that we are facing in the whole world, many people was affected by this virus especially the
educational development of students and their motivation to learn. Students motivation to learn are
also affected that's why Im going to conduct this study because this is the current problems and issues
that we are facing today.

The Conditions which gave rise to my research are: (Background of the Study)
The outbreak of the new coronavirus infection known as COVID-19 has first occurred at Huanan
Seafood Market in Wuhan City of China in December 2019 (Wikipedia, 2020), and within a couple of
months it has turned out to be a global health emergency. It has rapidly affected thousands of people,
who are sick or being killed due to the spread of this disease. The COVID-19 pandemic also resulted in a
widespread disruption such as travel restrictions, closure of schools and global economic recession.
Most countries around the world have temporarily closed educational institutions to contain the spread
of the virus and reduce infections (Tria, 2020).

Face to face learning engagement of students and teachers within the school has been suspended
due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic has paved the way to the implementation of Modular
Distance Learning as an urgent response to ensure continuity of education. The Philippines is in the
process of adapting to the new normal form of education at present, and continuous innovations of
educators and active involvement of other stakeholders are the driving force for its success (icate.org
2020).

This time of pandemic, we are struggling in our educational development. Where different modes
of learning are applied specifically for what is applicable or better to use. Also students motivation to
learn have different changes especially on their intrinsic motivation.
Intrinsic motivation is defined as the doing of an activity for its inherent satisfactions rather than for
some separable consequence’. It is associated with internal factors like interest, fun or challenge an
individual develops in doing activities, for the joy or satisfaction integrated in the activities Ryan and
Deci (2000a, p.56). Motivation is one of the most significant components of learning in any educational
context (Maeher, 2001). It has been identified as a determinant of student satisfaction and perceived
learning outcomes in distance education environments (Eom, Wen, & Ashill, 2015).

The use of modules encourages independent study. One of the benefits of using modules for
instruction is the acquisition of better self-study or learning skills among students. Students engage
themselves in learning the concepts presented in the module. They develop a sense of responsibility in
accomplishing the tasks provided in the module. With little or no assistance from others, the learners
progress on their own. They are learning how to learn; they are empowered (Nardo, M.T.B, 2017).
Despite all the advantages of modular learning, students have also challenges and difficulties in adapting
the new normal way of educational development.
The ideal situation would have been:

Modular learning approach is the most common methods that are recommended to use in NIPSC-
BVC CAMPUS in order to continue educational development even in this time of pandemic. Teachers
with their respective subjects are responsible in implementating/designing students modules including
the learner's objectives, asessment task and activities. This methods of instruction about modular
learning, enable students to learn in their own way without discussing/facilitating every learners from
their teachers. They must read and understand the concept for them to come up with the learning
objectives. Students are responsible in doing their asessment task, activities to comply for their
respective subject Teacher. This will serves as for evaluating students progress whether they understand
the lesson or not also for measuring student progress and their academic performance.

Proper health protocols are always observe in different communities, that's why our teachers was
able to send our modules through softcopies for those who have stable internet connection or can
download the file and hardcopies for those who have failed internet connection. The researcher
conducted this study in order to know whether there is an increase or decrease on the intrinsic
motivation of having the modular learning approach on BEED Students of NIPSC-BVC.
(Present the standards, rules, expected, mandated, recommended)

The possible reasons for the discrepancy of what should be and what it is:
Students have difficulties/challenges and problems that they encountered in terms of Modular
Learning that affects their intrinsic motivation to learn. This includes the poor self-efficacy because
during face to face learning, it's their custom for teaching and learning process that their teachers are
always discussing the lessons in order for them to understand. Also their teachers provides support
learning materials to enhance learning and facilitates task activities etheir it is challenging or not.
Having poor internet connections to do some research that results to their lack of interest and lower
their intrinsic motivation to learn. Lack of sleep that results to lower function of the brain, self-interest,
cannot focus answering the modules because it's also pressures students due to the great number of
activities and distractions. Learners cannot enjoy on their learning activities or performance task
because they have no chance to collaborate with their classmates/groupmates personally in order to
become more enjoyable unlike face to face learning. Learners also have the problem in terms of their
concentration to learn because there’s a lot of distraction like household chores. Lower self-motivation
to learn because most of the learners are afraid to ask or having no self-confidence to communicate
with their respective teachers to tell about their concerns regarding their modules, lessons, activity task
or assessment.
The following interventions have been done to address the problem, and
the outcomes were: (IF NONE, SAY SO)

To addressed these problems here are the following interventions done and the outcome. Some
students tried to adapt the modular learning methods but some of them didn't come up or understand
the lessons well especially to those who are low learners that's why most of them are having the lack of
interest in learning. Some Students tried to do their asessment task and activities without searching in
the internet for more valuable information that enhance their understanding but it's hard for them to do
learning task and activities without the internet this will results also for their lack of interest in learning.
Some teachers tried to make a group performance task for students thru online without face to face but
students cannot perform well they cannot enjoy their performance task because they have no personal
interaction on each other. Some students tried to finished their household chores before answering
their modules but most of them are able to call by their parents everytime and immediately for other
matters that results for the distruction of their learning and lack of concentration. Some students also
tried to communicate with their respective teachers via messenger, email, texts and etc. but some of
their teachers didn't reply immediatly about their concerns and questions, because sometimes teachers
are busy for other important matters.

THE FOLLOWING FACTS/FINDINGS HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN RELATED STUDIES ABOUT THE PROBLEM.

schools still prefer Modular Learning over Online Learning. Hence,
from a total of thirty respondents, twenty-seven of them have

challenges that the students have encountered are self-studying,
poor internet connection, lack of sleep and time to answer all the
modules due to the great number of activities, distractions, and
lack of focus.

brought by Covid-19 pandemic. This strategic plan is designed to
carry out the conduct of classes amidst pandemic. It is a
commitment of the government in protecting the health and safety
of learners, teachers, and school personnel under the health
protocol of the Department of Health (DOH) and the World Health
Organization (DepEd Order Nos. 12 and 13, 2020). Apart from the
LCP, all private basic education institutions are required to come up
with the school plan for compliance with the minimum health
standards as per DOH guidelines on the risk-based public health
standards for COVID-19 mitigation (DOH AO No.0015, 2020). All
these requirements need to be submitted to DepEd office before
the opening of the school year 2020 - 2021 (DepEd Order No. 14,
2020).

THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PROBLEM, HOWEVER, STILL REMAINS UNANSWERED:

Question 01:
What other possible impact to students motivation to learn if modular learning cannot addressed
students educational support needs for the improvement of their learning development?

Question 02:
Is it possible that students learning abilities, knowledge and skills may failed if they didn't have to
develop their intrinsic motivation to learn?
