CHAPTER I

Background of the study:

Education is not a preparation for life; education is life itself. In this modern
world today, education must uplift high and give more significance into it especially in
this time of pandemic. Hence, the Department of Education trying everything not to
stop the quality of education for our young minds, amidst pandemic different
modalities where being introduced and implemented in order to deliver and continue
education.

According to (Tria, 2020) almost all countries around the world have
temporarily closed educational institution to contain the minimize spread of the virus
and reduce infections. The Philippines, our country is developing incooping up with
this crisis and Philippines is adapting the new normal form of education. The
Department of Education developed Modular Distance Learning to ensure
educational continuity and for each school to continue to fulfill its objective and vision
of providing quality education to every Filipino learner.

Hence, the usage of modules fosters self-directed learning. One of the

advantages of employing modules for instruction is that pupils develop greater self-
study or learning skills. Students actively participate in understanding the concepts
provided in the module. They gain a sense of responsibility as they complete the
tasks in the module. The students’ progress on their own with little or no help from
others. They are learning how to learn and are becoming more self-assured.

The goal of this research is to find out how learners feel about their modular
distance learning. The primary goal of this study is to improve academic
performance. In this time of pandemic, the responses of students may be of great
assistance in developing a quality education process.

Statement of the Problem:

This study aims to find out the effectivity of modular distance learning as one
of the modalities in continuing education amidst pandemic of G.10 students of
Gigaquit National School of Home Industries and its correlation to their academic
performance.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following;

1. What are the challenges of G.10 students on modular distance learning that
affects their academic performance?
2. Is there a significant difference in the academic performance of the Grade 10
students in GNSHI who chose modular distance learning?
3. Is there a significant relationship between the performance of the Grade 10
students on modular distance learning and challenges encountered?

Significance of the Study:

Modular printed distance learning is one of the modalities being used or

implemented in today’s continuing education against pandemic. Modular learning is
very much applicable in remote areas since internet connectivity is poor and hard to
access. Thus, learning and continuing education gives a vital role in everything.

Researcher conducted this study to assess how effective modular printed

distance learning as a learning modality used in GNSHI in continuing education
amidst pandemic. This study may lead to the administration and stakeholders to look
more and implement learning modality for the best choice and self-pace for the
learners.

Scope and delimitation of the Study:

The general intent of this study is to evaluate the effectivity of modular printed
distance learning of Grade 10 students in Gigaquit National School of Home
Industries. This study will also identify some challenges affecting academic
performance of the students.
Conceptual Framework:

Research Hypotheses:

At 0.05 level of significance, the following hypotheses were made:

H01: There is no significant difference on academic performance of the students who

selected modular distance learning as a learning modality in GNSHI.

Ho2 : There is no significant relationship between challenges encountered of Grade

10 students an their academic performance.

Definition of Terms:

Academic Performance – refers to the given average grade of Grade 10 students

for the academic year.

Modular Distance Learning – a learning modality that emphasized individualized

instruction that allow learners to use self-learning modules in print or digital format.
Effectivity – a state of being able to bring the effect of something’ power to be
effective

Students Performance - the student's final product, which is commonly indicated

through their grades.

REVIEW AND RELATED LITERATURE

Last October 2020, the Department of Education (DepEd) Philippines

restarted classes despite the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, and one teaching and
learning style that the department determined to be effective in this situation was
Modular Distance Learning.

Due to the pandemic's threat to people's health, the Department of Education

chose to bring education to their homes, and they've been developing multiple
learning modalities to ensure that education is available to everyone and that it
continues. The Department of Education (DepEd) proposed three learning modes for
the school year 2020-2021, blended, distance, and homeschooling, to address the
abrupt shift from the traditional to the new normal in the teaching and learning
process.

Modular distance learning is one of the modalities used in this time of

pandemic. Other schools like big schools are also adapting blended learning in
which they used two modalities such as Modular learning printed or online and at the
same time, they have a limited onsite learning for some assessments to be done.

According to Estrada,L.(2021), the modular learning strategy is on a knife's

edge, and it's not because of the teachers or the students. From the beginning, the
idea appears to be defective. It would be difficult to provide each student equal and
undivided attention in a classroom with so many children, especially in public
schools. Teachers likewise struggle to reach out to all of their students, but are
unable to do so due to economic and social constraints.

Ideally, Teachers will keep track of their student’s development through home
visitation (following social distancing and wearing facemasks) and feedback
mechanisms, guiding those who require further help. Modules should artistically
enhanced parts on motivation and assessment that act as a comprehensive guide
for both teachers and students’ desired competencies. With this, it can help learners
to learn and develop skills and most importantly it helps them being motivated in
pursuing education amidst crisis.

According also to Dangle and Sumaoang, the most popular sort of distance
learning is modular learning. According to a poll done by the Department of
Education (DepEd), learning through printed and digital modules emerged as the
most favored distant learning method of parents with children enrolled this academic
year (Bernardo, J). This is important in consideration of learners in remote regions
who do not have access to the internet for online learning. Learners are given their
favored time to answer and learn their modules or the so called self-paced learning
and at the same time they can have also the time to relax from draining modules
they have. Since, teaching and learning process can no longer be done within the
school, parents or guardians serves as partners of teachers and at same time a
stakeholder in education. Parents play a big role as home facilitator, tutor, and a
modulator in his/her children. Their main role in modular learning is to create a
connection and guide their children (FlipScience, 2020).

According to the study conducted by Ambayon (2020), when compared to

traditional teaching methods, modular instruction is more effective in the teaching-
learning process since students learn at their own pace. It is an unlimited self-
learning process in which students are stimulated and their interest is piqued by
quick reinforcement, such as a comment on a practice exercise. As a result, this type
of learning modality promotes a student-centered learning strategy.

Moreover, it is evident that modular distance learning gives and promotes

positive outcome to the teaching-learning process particularly to the learners and to
the teachers as well. With this, looking forward that this study will come up with a
positive result that may help to the administration in dealing continuous quality
education to our learners.

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

Research Design:

The researcher used a survey research design method in this study. The
respondents were the researcher students’ advisory class for this academic year.
With this, this study is a non-experimental method that may help the administration
build and implement purposeful technique to enhanced the academic performance of
the students.

Research Sample:

The study utilizes a non-random sampling method by the researcher. The

entire population of this study all grade 10 Bray.

Research Instruments:

The study will collect data using a 10-item likert scale questionnaire
created by the researcher. Students' challenges with modular distance learning will
be the subject of the inquiries. The responders will answer the questions and mark
their chosen options with a check mark.

Data Collection Procedure:

The study will use online platforms such as in a Google form for those who
can access and has a strong internet connection. To those students who has a poor
connection they can also answer the survey through a messenger poll on our Group
Chat.

The researcher will orient first the respondents for this study and how to
access the given flatforms used for the study. After the orientation, the students can
now access the survey questionnaire through the link given to them and on
messenger also. The respondents are given so much time to answer the survey
based on their interest and willingness to answer. The responses will be gathered
and organized by using a table to analyzed easily.

Data Analysis Procedure:

To analyze the challenges, meet of the respondents on modular distance

learning as a variable of the study, standard deviation and mean will be used by the
researcher. Table will be used to present the data and interpretation or explanation
of the data will interpret fully and appropriate.

The study is focused on the effectivity of modular distance learning as a

modality in continuing education of the Grade 10 students in Gigaquit National
school of Home Industries. It also assesses the challenges meet by the students that
may affect their academic performance by modular distance learning.
