Impact of Using Modular Learning as a Delivery Mode in Learning Mathematics to the

Selected Grade 1 Pupils of Concepcion Elementary School

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to find out the Impact of Using Modular

Learning as a Delivery Mode in Learning Mathematics to the

Selected Pupils of Concepcion Elementary School.

This research would like to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the learner in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

2. What is the impact of modular learning as a delivery mode

in learning mathematics in terms of:

2.1 Visualizing Numbers from 0 - 100

2.2 Reads and Writes number up to 100 in Symbols and in

Words

3. What is the performance of the learners in mathematics

subject for the first quarter of the school year 2021 –

2022.
Introduction

The COVID-19 outbreak has resulted drastic changes in

education. Part of it is the shift from face-to-face classes to

different learning modalities. Since education is believed to

continue despite the circumstances, teachers started to prepare

for modular and online distance learning (De Villa and Manalo,

2020).

The Department of Education issued Department Order No.18

series of 2020, Policy Guidelines for the Provision of Learning

Resources in the Implementation of the Basic Education Learning

Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) to ensure that learning opportunities

are provided to learners in a safe manner, through different

learning deliveries. This initiative is anchored in the 1987

Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines. Article XIV,

Section 1 states that the “State shall protect and promote the

right of all citizens to quality education at all levels and

shall take appropriate steps to make such education accessible to

all”.

Self - Learning Modules (SLM) become an ideal learning

resource and a priority in remote or distance learning where a

teacher is unable to provide the usual instructional supervision

and guidance in a classroom setting. SLMs have been used by DepEd

for its alternative delivery modes during disasters or in

situations where learners have difficulty for daily school

attendance and COVID-19 has compelled the use of SLMs on a large

scale (DepEd Order No. 18 series 2020: Policy Guidelines for the

Provision of Learning Resources in the Implementation of the

Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan, 2020).

The modular distance learning emerged as the teaching –

learning modality which poses challenges to teachers in providing

basic quality education. Teachers were not experienced and have

not received sufficient training on how to deal with this type of

learning modality. Teachers were caught unprepared for this

process, and they were expected to take the initiative and carry

out this process on their own. Teachers who have limited skills

in providing distance education face difficulties in effectively

carrying out this process (Esra, T., 2020).

However, using modules has its advantages and disadvantages.

According to (Nardo,M.T.B, 2017), the use of modules advocates

self-directed learning. Using modules for learning leads to

better self-study or learning skills among students. The concepts

presented in the modules engross students in learning. The tasks

provided develop a sense of responsibility among students and

they progressed on their own. They learn to learn; they are

empowered. In addition, the

students participate in real experiences. They discover new

things, and they experience their knowledge on their own.

Students learn to reflect on their own experiences, thus

developing new

skills, learning through modular direct students to be in charge

of their own learning.

The use of modules has its disadvantages also. According to

Bijeesh (2017), without the presence of the faculty and their

classmates who remind them of their assignments the chances of

getting distracted and losing track of deadlines are high. In

addition, in the study of Dangle, and Sumaoang (2020) they

revealed the main challenges that emerged in the implementation

of

modular distance learning where budget is not enough in the

making and delivery of modules; students had a hard time

answering their tasks on their modules and the lack of knowledge

of parents academically to guide their child/children.

With all the advantages and disadvantages of using the

modular learning as a learning modality, this research aims to

determine the impact using modular learning as a delivery mode in

learning mathematics to the selected grade 1 pupils of Concepcion

Elementary School.
