International Studies:
The Benefits and Challenges of Modular Higher Education Curricula
Modularization is related to the basic concept of splitting the program into small discrete
modules or units that are individualistic, non-sequential and usually limited. Universities have
employed widely credit-based modular curriculum systems to address the needs of more
diverse groups of students and to provide students with greater versatility and choice in the
management of their studies. Generally, they accept that modular degrees have many benefits
for students in terms of their ability to provide versatility, preference, connectivity, and
accessibility. It is also broadly agreed that modular systems can be beneficial to universities in
that they potentially allow institutions to better adapt to employers' needs, extend student
markets, make more effective use of resources, and increase the reach of curricula. Even so, it
is also stated that modularization introduces the likelihood of uncertainty and irrationality of
learning experience, potentially destabilizes academic goal, and raises pedagogical,
epistemological, and structural challenges.

Effectiveness of Modular Approach in Teaching at University Level

The use of self-learning module in education is another type of individual instructions.
This is called a modular approach to education - learning (Jayasree, 2004). Modular education
is a new approach to classroom environments. It is one of the most common and recognizes
teaching methods in many nations, including other Western countries and the Asian region. In
this analysis, modular teaching is more effective than ordinary teaching methods in the teaching
process since students learn at their own pace. It is a free self-learning style in which immediate
motivation, guidance is given to perform exercise, which motivates students and stimulates
interest in them. Modular approach aims to increase the likelihood of student engagement in the
classroom in order to execute the activities on the spot.

Nanay, Handa Na Ba Kayong Maging Tagapagdaloy? Supercharging Filipino Parents is
Key for Successful Modular Distance Learning
Modular learning is a type of distance learning that uses Self-Learning Modules (SLMs)
based on the most important learning skills (MELCS) developed by DepEd. Based on data
obtained through DepEd's National Learner Enrolment and Survey Forms (LESFs), 8.8 million
of the 22.2 million enrolled (39.6 percent of total respondents chose modular distance learning
this school year. The modular approach puts Filipino students in a position to learn in the
comfort of their homes. Restricted interaction with teachers will position parents or guardians as
models of learners or more knowledgeable others" (MKO). With parents as primary models of
learners, their behaviors, specific beliefs, thoughts and feelings—cognitive biases—may
influence the academic performance of each learner. They can be deliberately or inadvertently
shown or instructed by the MKOs. In addition, parents' educational attainment will improve their
sense of competence and trust in directing their children's education.

Students’ New Normal : Modular Distance Learning
The Philippine education system is now transitioning to a new blended learning setting.
The Department of Education also insists that education should not be compromised amid
demands for academic freeze due to coronary virus outbreaks. There are three categories for
this type of modality. Modular distance learning is among the most convenient for most
traditional Filipino students. It was also the most effective teaching system of the number of
parents/guardians based on the Learning Enrollment and Survey Form (LESF). The Department
of Education will be responsible for supplying and distributing self-learning modules to each
student every week through their respective schools. They will have plenty of time to review and
analyze the modules before the start of the weekly lesson. Children can adapt from the
conventional school set up to which they have been accustomed. So as parents and guardians,
commitment to helping and directing them would be of great benefit. Proper time management
and consistency would be the most engaging tools for our students to get through this.

THE NEW NORMAL IN EDUCATION: A CHALLENGE TO THE PRIVATE BASIC
EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS IN THE PHILIPPINES?
The crisis has become problems not only for the medical sector, but also for education
sector. At the height of the pandemic, remote learning to be an alternative option for educational
institutions. Parents play a significant role in their child's academic success in teaching and
learning. At the beginning, their crucial position is discussed through a consultative session on
the adaptation of the learning modality. The involvement of family in virtual learning is significant
(Kuruvilla, 2020), they need to track their child's development and success during their day-to-
day activities during independent learning hours, as students are home-based. Teachers would
not be able to meet the optimal learning results at the end of the day without the help of their
parents. According to Rich (2020), parents should cast their children's concerns about the
situation. Owing to the difficult times, children's stress and anxiety levels are rising. Their
position is amplified as their children are home-schooled. They should be alert on their
children's problematic responses as they raise their stress levels. It is advisable to have fair
distractions when studying independently. Saxena & Saxena (2020) recommend that parents
first control their anxiety and be in stable mental health before they face their children. The role
of family in the absence of teachers is crucial to the learning success of children.

Blended Learning Approach: Effect on Students’ Academic Achievement and Practical
Skills in Science Laboratories
Whenever a student is introduced to a blended learning approach, academic
achievement is illustrated (Migalang, 2018). This may be due to a consistent review of lessons
by students when a blended learning approach has been implemented. The same Suryanti
research findings (2018) show that exposure to educational technology related to academic
performance has allowed students to have a high post-test result. Blended learning has been
shown to have beneficial effects on student achievement and learners collaborate actively
(Eryilmaz, 2015). This ensures that students can gain current knowledge and actively generate
new knowledge for the success of the assignment in the knowledge sharing process with peers.
Via cognitive exercises, blended learning is likely to boost student performance. Students who
witnessed the introduction of technology into their learning received higher scores after the
intervention than those who encountered conventional instruction only (Dagaang, 2016).
Therefore a blended learning approach is successful in teaching science and has helped to
improve the academic success of students.
