ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to know the importance of education as an agent of

socialization. It also identified the feedback of the respondents based on the given

questionnaires. In conducting the study, the researchers conducted an interview

specifically in the Saint Joseph College of Sindangan Incorporated, Poblacion, Sindangan,

Zamboanga del Norte. The researchers have gave and personally administered the

questionnaires to each respondents. After conducting the study, the information were

gathered and then analyze. The results showed that education is one of the agents of

socialization. It showed that most of the time are spent in school thus, school have a

great impact in molding their skills and socialization. Through which socialization are

manifested in the different co-curricular activities, school’s curriculum and other things

done at school.

vii
CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Nature & Background of the Study

Modern or ancient, education had been a part of the progress or development of

a child. Education thought students almost everything. This serves as the building block

of how student will become in the future. In school we learn how to write, listen as well

as socialize with teachers and peers. In terms of socialization, the school has, in recent

years, come to take over some of the form functions of the family and community i.e.

the school has become a primary agency of socialization. Education serves as a platform

for socialization between groups of people with different characters, behaviors, attitude

or races.

One way of appreciating the role of education’s potential of socializing lies on a

simple reckoning of the amount of time students spend on schools and school related

activities. The students spend the major part of their active hours of the day in school,

from morning to evening they stay for duration of about nine months in a year. Obviously,

during this time student acquires a lot from the teachers and fellow students. Due to this

fact the school becomes an important agent of socialization. Among the most important

agencies of socialization is the school; i.e. other than the home the school is the other

important institution in which socialization takes place.

Teachers, educators and students have taken for granted the impact of education

as an agent for socialization. Students may experience some difficulties that can guide its

behavior in the wrong direction. Hence, this paper focuses on the socializing function of

the school and on the fact that it has remained the most stable traditional agent of

socialization as well as the one that teaches children the strongest. The school is the

agent responsible for socializing groups of children and young people on specific skills

and values in a society.

1.2 Objectives of the Study

This section illustrates the objectives of the researchers in doing this study. The

researcher’s main objective is to:

 To know how relevant education is as socializing agent.

 To know the different feedback of the students towards socialization in school.

 To solve various problems relating to the topic.

Through this, the researchers would do any means to accomplish these objectives.

The researchers would follow every step and procedure to make the study an efficient

one. Also, the complete research process would be pursued, and proper observations

would be made for the accuracy of this paper.

2
1.3 Research Question

This study aims to know about education as a socializing agent. Specifically, this

study answers the following questions:

1. What is the importance of education as a socializing agent?

2. What are the different feedback of the students towards education as a unique

socializing agent?

1.4 Significance of the Study

This section illustrates who are the beneficiaries and what are the benefits they can

get from this research study.

This research will surely benefit the readers because through this, they can get ideas

and insights about the topic and everything related to it. They can have an idea of how

relevant and what important role education is as a socializing agent. The result of the

study could also benefit the following:

Students. The students especially those taking up fields concerning the topic can benefit

from the study. Furthermore, students can be enlighten with how relevant education is

by means of socializing. In such cases, students’ socialization skills will develop as well

as their abilities, skills & knowledge as far as socializing and education is concern.

Educators. They can benefit from this study because through this study, they can be

able to know the things that should be done in school in order to develop students’

3
sociological behavior. Moreover, educators can learn different strategic approaches to

enhance and encourage socialization inside and outside a classroom environment.

Researchers. The outcome of the study is beneficial to either present or the future

researchers who wish to conduct a study that is related to the topic.

1.5 Scope & Delimitations of the Study

This study focuses about education as a unique socializing agent. Other factor

irrelevant to these variables is not included. The respondents of this study are the 1st year

Bachelor of Science in Accountancy college students of Saint Joseph College of Sindangan

Incorporated of Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte. The researchers selected a total of

thirty (30) respondents during the data collection of the study. This study is expected to

be completed within the serving semester, school year 2019-2020.

4
CHAPTER II

REVIEW ON RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the syntheses of related studies about this study. The

variables used in the study are separated in relation to their uses in each study.

Education

Education as defined by Bowen J. et al is a discipline that is concerned with

methods of teaching and learning in schools or school-like environments as opposed to

various nonformal and informal means of socialization (e.g., rural development projects

and education through parent-child relationships). The fundamental task of education is

to form people who will be able to integrate socially (in kindergarten, school, society) and

then take on responsibilities in the groups they belong to (Petrovai, 2012). Education is

a basic and primary condition to cultivate knowledge and civilize people for their all-round

development (Mirowsky, 2017).

Education are the agents responsible for socializing groups of children and young

people on specific skills and values in a society (Henslin,1999). Appelbaum and Chambliss

(1997) argue that this socializing agent probably contributes most to social conformity.

The school system has become the glue that holds society together. Schooling has been
defined by Biddle & Payne (1999) as the appearance of organized instructional activity in

which the position of the teaches is differentiated from other positions in the system and

given the explicit task of socializing neophytes. The school is the first large-scale

organization of which the child becomes a member. The school is a miniature reflecting

what goes on in the wider society (Saldana, 2013).

Socialization

Socialization is the process of creating a social self, learning one’s culture and

learning the rules and expectations of the culture. The socialization of the individual is

accomplished throughout his life, going through different stages, in an upward direction.

Experience in childhood is essential in the socialization process. Piaget & Inhelder (1980),

supports the idea that “the child starts from a purely individual state, that of the first

months of existence when no exchange is possible with others, and then a progressive

socialization that will never end.”

The socialization process starts from the youngest age when first social contacts

and life experiences take place throughout the man’s life. Erickson (1950) argues that

“every stage of the human development is characterized by a certain type of

socialization”. Socialization has as main purpose the realization of the ability to obey the

exigencies of social norms and ideals materialized in the cultural values of the group to

which man belongs. The socialization process represents the social integration and

identity of the person. “The process, as such, has an ontogenetic evolution that obeys

6
the social-historical one through the traditions, mentalities, the level of culture and

civilization transmitted from generation to generation” (Şchiopu & Versa, 1995).

Social interactions teach children about themselves and what they need to do to

become accepted and competent members of their social worlds. Within the context of

these interactions, children develop a set of values and standards for behavior and goals

they strive to achieve (Grusec & Goodnow, 1994).

Social Interactions with Teachers

In the classroom, teachers play the central pedagogical function of transmitting

knowledge and training students in academic subject areas. However, during the course

of instruction, teachers also promote the development of behavioral competencies by way

of classroom management practices (Doyle, 1986), and by structuring learning

environments in ways that make social goals more salient to students (Cohen, 1986).

Similarly, Birch and Ladd (1998) found teacher-child closeness to be associated positively

with children's academic performance, school liking, and selfdirectedness, whereas

relationships marked by conflict and dependency were associated with less than positive

outcomes, including declines in children's prosocial behavior over time.

7
CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods used in the study. A comprehensive discussion

on how the data was obtained, validated, and treated is presented herein. The proponents

discuss the research design, research locale, sampling, research instrument, data

gathering procedure and the statistical treatment of the data appropriate on the study.

The overall chapter contributes thorough details of what the researchers will do in

completing the study and to how information and data are generated from the

respondents.

3.1 Research Design

In this portion of the research proposal, the proponents of the study will use the

descriptive research design in conducting the study, specifically questionnaire in order to

accomplish the purpose of this research. The said research design will be used to further

evaluate the responses of the respondents based on the questions formulated by the

researchers.
3.2 Research Locale

The study will be conducted in Saint Joseph College of Sindangan Incorporated

located in Poblacion, Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte. The place was suitable for the

study because this is where the respondents and researchers were enrolled.

3.3 Sampling

In choosing the respondents of the study, the proponents should not be biased

and choose it in an ethical way in order to gather the best and precise information abot

the “Education: A Unique Socializing Agent”. The 1st year Bachelor of Science in

Accountancy (BSA) students will serve as the respondents of the study. In choosing the

respondents the use of random sampling were employed.

3.4 Research Instruments

The questionnaires was the main instrument to be used in this study. It was

composed of the following parts: in Part I, the introductory page in terms of the title of

the study, purpose of the study, duration of the study / length of the questions or

statements to be answered and guarantee of confidentiality; in Part II, the demographic

profile of the respondents in terms name (optional), age and gender and in Part III, the

9
expression of thanks to the respondents as an accomplishment of answering the

questionnaires.

Questionnaire for this study was personally made by the proponents of this study.

Prior to the preparation of the instrument, the researchers endeavored to read several

references like books, magazines, journals and make use of the internet materials.

3.5 Data Collection Procedure

The proponents conducted this study at Saint Joseph College of Sindangan

Incorporated 1st year Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) College student. The

researchers gave and personally administered the questionnaires to each respondent.

The respondents were given 5 minutes to answer the questionnaire. Then after the

allotted time, the researcher retrieved immediately and analyze the information gathered.

10
CHAPTER IV

SUMMARIZING, RECOMMENDATIONS & CONCLUSION

This chapter presented the summary of findings, conclusions and

recommendations.

This part showed the summary of findings on the profile of respondents.

4.1 Research Conclusion

Socialization appears to be a continuous process of reconstructing, nourishing and

developing. Since children come from different backgrounds, the work of the school

therefore is to connect every citizens to create a mutual goal and understanding through

socialization. The school represents and serves as an effort by the society to socialize its

young. It does this through the content of the curriculum and co-curricular activities.

They also socialize the values that they communicate to the child. Teachers also act as

models for students.

The purpose of this study is to provide the analytical support to the teacher, to

prevent (primarily) a possible failure and, if these problems arose, to provide the

opportunity to identify and solve the problem.

4.2. Recommendation for Future Research

Since this study had only focus on Saint Joseph College of Sindangan Incorporated,

focusing only in College students, it is recommended that further studies should be carried

out on students from other schools and other grade levels and/or should cater many

respondents to see whether there are any similarities in the findings. Furthermore, it is

also recommended to future researchers to seek the opinion of the teachers and or

educators or include the teachers as a respondents.
