The Reader
According to a TotalFilms audience figures, 75% of the viewers are male, the average is aged 26,
the readers are dedicated film enthusiasts who have bought an average of 32 films in the last
twelve months. Their location is predominantly central England. The average income is said to be
34,532 annually.
From my research I found that it would target people who are dedicated film enthusiasts, the
typical reader is one that might be first in line to see a film on the opening day, studies showed
that they are also first to buy a DVD of a film they like and enjoy sharing their interests with
others. The reader is interested in mainstream cinema, they want to know the latest news on
Hollywood blockbusters, stars and new releases, they have a significant amount of free time to
allow them to have their keen interest in cinema and consuming mainstream media.
My own research, carried out through the surveys I created suggested that the reader was mostly
male, aged from 21-30, single and from group E. The majority of people asked said they would be
white with any religion, when asked they also said they would be from any location. When I asked
about their self image people said they would be mainstream and young and they said their
nationality would be English. Many people said they would be doing A-levels, would appeal to
niche people who might buy the magazine and hobbies would include film. They may have
aspiration of working in the industry. - Film will be main interest in terms of art and culture.
When looking at market segmentation, Total films demographic is young professionals, students or
graduates who have free time and a fair income, they are UK central as the magazine really
highlights British film.
The type of people to read it would probably have a strong enough interest to subscribe to the
magazine all together, rather than just occasionally buying it, they prefer to be constantly updated
as film is something that is constantly evolving and updating.

The reader
They target the reader through the magazines appearance by how the cover is
glossy, crisp and eye catching, they display the biggest blockbuster films around
way in advance of them being released to attract the targets attention who are
interested in big films. The glossy look delivers the glamour of cinema. Total film
provides the audience with the assurance that they are getting the ultimate
guide to the new films they are talking about with every detail included. It focuses
on the young generation who aspire to get into the film industry by including
advice on how to get your movie made feature which makes the reader feel as
though they are gaining something important from the magazine.
Total Film says worlds best reviews at the top which encourages readers to buy it
because they believe it is the best choice of magazine from this exaggerated and
unprovable statement.
I know the magazine targets the younger generation from the companies use of
social media. They have a Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and a photo/tablet app. Social
media and apps are quite a new and evolving thing, mostly used by younger ages,
telling me that Total Film attempt to reach this audience through technology which
is something older people are known not to understand as much. It has 365,000
followers on twitter, 410165 likes on Facebook and 250,000 followers on Tumblr,
telling me that the company successfully reaches people on social media from the
many people that follow it, also telling me that a high fraction of followers are
young because they read more through social media.
