Week 18

It has been a very fun and busy week here in our classroom! We had a
brother and sister dynamic duo for our Super Heros!!!
Aubrey read Brown Bear, Brown Bear and Lawrence read There Was
an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly! They did marvelous and showed so
much confidence in sharing their books! Way to go!

Language: This week we finished off our first round of alphabet

practice with the letter Qq! We are so proud of the children for
making it through one whole round of the alphabet! We will continue on
with practicing our letters and their sounds.
We read The Mitten by Jan Brett this week. Students love this
Ukrainian tale about a mitt that finds itself inhabited by many
different animals. We have been retelling the story and sequencing its
events all week!
Our Writers Workshop this week was about The Mitten. The students
completed the sentence: My mitten is so big a _________ can fit in it!
Our sight words this week are: if, all, as, by, had

We began looking at consonant digraphs as well. We are looking

specifically at the four main digraphs: ch, sh, th, wh
Phys. Ed: This week we continued our practice with ball skills,
specifically throwing and catching. Students are working hard trying to
refine their large muscle movements.
Arts: We continue to listen to music from around the world! This week
we listened to calming sounds from India. We also reenacted the
mitten by having various students crawl under a blanket (the mitten)
and then jump out when the bear sneezes! So much fun!
Computers: We visited the computer lab this week for the 1st time! It
was an interesting experience for the children. We hope to make this
part of our weekly agenda from now on!
Math: This week we looked at shapes and using geometric language
(number and length of sides, number of vertices/corners) to describe a
rectangle and a square. The children had fun creating these shapes
using geo-boards.
Science: Students have been engaging in various snow related
experiments this week. They investigated the temperature of ice, snow
and water and experienced how water, snow and ice are effected by
changing surrounding temperatures. We also discussed the importance
and possibilities of movement throughout the seasons in the power to
play program.
Religion: The students enjoyed roll playing this week. We acted out
what it means to be a good neighbor. The students did a wonderful job!
We are noticing greater confidence in many students when speaking
orally! Well done!
