WHO WOULD BE THE

AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MUSIC

MAGAZINE

AGE OF READER

Traditionally magazines such as XXL have an average readership age of about 25-29. Although this is also the
target age range for Graffiti, I have also aimed some of the features in Graffiti towards a slightly lower age
group, 21-24, such as the female rappers article. Some of the articles would not be suitable for very young
readers. For example, the double page spread on Alfie Dobinson contains a drug reference in one of the
headings. The fashion articles will appeal to those readers with high disposable income in order that they
can afford the designer fashion which is featured in my magazine. These tend to be readers at the top of the
age range i.e late 20s.

GENDER OF READER

I have included fashion articles and features that will appeal to female readers, as I am hoping to attract
a greater female readership to a rap magazine. This is because rap magazines appeal overwhelmingly to
males, and by including an article on female rappers, I would like to redress this. I am aware that Graffiti
is still likely to appeal, in the main, to male readers

ETHNICITY OF READER

Judging by the majority of rap magazine covers and articles, rap music is seen as very much appealing to
an black/ African American readership. Research has shown that rap music also appeals to a large
number of white rap fans. Figures vary regarding the percentage of white rap fans at between 65 and
75% of all rap music fans. Graffiti is aimed at a diverse mix of reader ethnicity.

SOCIAL GROUP OF READER

Rap magazines contain high end fashion articles and photoshoots, and Graffiti is no exception. These
articles will appeal to those with disposable income. Balancing this with the general Socio economic
group that are attracted to rap music which is traditionally young urban males, Graffiti is aimed at a
diverse economic group which if averaged out would be inclined towards C1, C2.
