OUR TOPIC THIS TERM IS

MIGRATION

We are finding out

about the reasons

why people leave

their homes and
move from place to
place.

Some people move because

they want to.
Some people dont want to
move, they have to.
They are forced to leave their
homes because where they
live is not safe.

Many people are leaving

the country of Syria at the
moment because it is not
safe for them to stay.

There is a war in Syria.

The homes of innocent people
are being bombed. There is not
enough food. Schools, hospitals
and shops have been destroyed.

The conflict becomes

bigger and more
complicated every day.
It is nearly impossible to
tell which side people are
on and who the enemy is.

People feel that they have

no choice but to leave.
They dont want to leave
but it is not safe for them
to stay.

The people that are leaving

Syria are called refugees.
A refugee is a person who
flees from their home to
find refuge or safety.

The people leaving Syria

are families, just like us.

They are mothers and

fathers trying to keep their
children safe.

To leave, people have to walk

great distances.
They can only take what they
can carry.
Everything else must be left
behind.

Everybody walks.
The sick, the injured, the very
old and the very young.

Travelling is dangerous and

exhausting.
Land borders are closed with
fences and armed guards.

People are desperate to leave.

People who make it to the coast

try to leave Syria on boats.

They must pay lots of money to

people smugglers.
The boats are unsafe and very
over-crowded. Many die.

Refugees who make it out of Syria

face new difficulties.
They are kept in refugee camps
while other countries argue about
what to do with them.

The camps are not nice. It is

especially difficult for children.

There is not enough food or water

taps. There are not enough
blankets.
There are not enough toilets and
there is not enough medicine.
There are no toys and there
are no schools.

Winter is coming.
Soon the Syrian refugees will be
facing freezing conditions.

Many will die if the world does

not respond quickly.

Syrians have the same rights as

New Zealanders. We are all part of
the same human family.
Knowledge is power.
If we know about the crisis we
may be able think of ways to help.

We have prepared a Quiz on the

Syrian Refugee Crisis.

There are 10 Facts.

Your task is to decide which of
the facts are true and which
are false.

Each Studio will have a True/False

card.
Each question will be read twice.
Then you will have about 15
seconds to decide on your answer.
Everyone will reveal their answer
at the same time.

In the case of a tie-breaker, one

extra fact will be read to determine
a winner.

If studios are still tied after the tiebreaker fact, we

will use Paper Scissors Rock
to determine a winner

The winning class will receive a

prize, a Sock Monkey class
mascot, made by LS19.
These were very popular during
the school Craft Market.

You may have 2 leaders

representing your Learning
Studio. Please discuss this with
your teacher now.

Could Class Leaders please make

their way to the stage.
