Compound Lab

Purpose: To determine what bond type each unknown sample is through a

series of tests.
Materials:

Samples
Timer
Toothpicks
Beaker
Wire Square
Distilled Water
Pipet
Scooper
Ring stand
Burner
Aluminum foil
Well plate
Electric wires

Procedure:
Melting Test:
1. Measure out .2 grams
2. Light burner with match
3. Place samples separately on aluminum foil - one or two at a time,
as long as they are not touching
4. Record whether it melted or not
Dissolve in distilled water test:
1. Measure out .2 grams of each sample
2. Put water in well plate
3. Put samples in different spots of well plate
4. Record whether or not each sample dissolved or not
Conducts Electricity in Water:
1. Measure out 4g of each sample
2. Place samples in water
3. Attach electric cords to samples
4. Record whether or not light came on
Conducts Electricity Without Water:

1. Measure 4g of each sample

2. Attach wires to sample
3. Record whether light comes on or not
Melting:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Measure out .2g of each sample

Place samples in separate spots on well plate
Place water in each spot and stir
Record whether they dissolved or not

Analysis:
From the results we got we got one metallic bond, three ionic, and two
covalent bonds. We did a melting test, a dissolving in water test, and tested
whether it was conductive in water or not. There may have been a couple
mistakes in our tests but I think we got the correct bonds.
