Title: Food Test


Aim: To test food samples for starch and fat.
Apparatus/ Materials
Spotting tile, iodine solution, test tube, measuring cylinder, spatula, ethanol, test tube rack,
mortar and pestle, food samples.( at least 7 )

Method: Testing for Starch
(i) Obtain seven (7) food samples and place samples into separate wells of the spotting tile.
(ii) Add 3-4 drops of iodine unto each sample.
(iii) Record all observations.
Testing for Fat
(i) Crush solid samples with water than add a spatula full into separate test tube.
(ii) Pour 5 cm3 of ethanol into each test tube and shake gentle for three (3) minutes.
(iii) Record all observations.

Title: Food Test
Aim: To test food samples for protein, reducing and non-reducing sugars.
Apparatus and Materials: test tube, Bunsen burner, tripod, measuring cylinder, sodium
hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, stop watch, Benedict’s solution, unknown solutions, copper
sulphate , sodium hydroxide

Testing for Protein
1. Pour 4cm of solution into separate test tubes.
2. Add 2cm of potassium hydroxide and 1cm of copper sulphate solution into each test tube.
3. Shake tubes for 3 minutes then allow settle.
4. Record results.

Test for Reducing sugar


1. Pour 2cm3 of unknown solutions in separate test tubes.
2. Add 2cm3 of Benedict’s solution in each test tube.
3. Gently shake the mixture then allow boiling for 1 minute.
4. Tabulate results.
Test for Non-reducing sugar
1. Pour 1cm of each solution into separate test tube.
2. Add 1cm of hydrochloric acid to each tube then allow boiling for 1minute.
3. Remove tubes and add 1cm of sodium hydroxide solution followed by 2cm of Benedict’s
solution.
4. Boil the mixture for 1minutes.
5. Tabulate results.
