Formulate a plan to prepare yourself for a particular field

A) Collecting job information

- Field of work: Law

- Availability of work: Guyana has about 22 small and large law firms willing
to hire anytime or may open own firm

- Hour of work: Usually 6 hours (9am- 3pm)

- Wages: Most firms offer $120,000 to associates but increases upon cases
won or salary may vary if opening own firm

- Accessibility to home: Easy access as most firms are located in and around
Georgetown and about 15 minutes from home

- Benefits: Bonuses for Christmas, Ability to travel, funding to further study

- Prospects for advancement: Promotion upon constant success and period

B) Listing and assessing available options

Option 1-
Join local firms like Frater & Housty Attorney at junior associate position, further
study on job and gain experience overtime in order work my way up to senior
partner. (may start working early)
Option 2-
Continue study, increase qualifications and open my own firm (may take a few
years longer and require own funding)
C) Working Out The Consequences

Working for a firm (Option 1)


Advantages:
- Salary is definite despite performance of firm
- Availability to further studying with funds from firm
Disadvantages:
- Longer time to work way to top
- Contracted, usually for 5-10 years preventing ability to move for better
opportunities

Opening own Firm (Option 2)

Advantages:
- Flexibility working for self
- Ability to make large sums of money
Disadvantages:
- Salary may vary depending on firm’s success
- Necessary capital to start fun, possibly a partner to start alongside
- Failure of firm to succeed may result in closure of firm
