ExplorerandnavigatorColumbuswasbornin1451,intheRepublicofGenoa
(Italy)tothesonofaweaver.Columbusfirstwenttoseaasateenager,
participatinginseveraltradingvoyagesintheMediterraneanandAegean
seas.Onesuchvoyage,totheislandofKhios,inmoderndayGreece,
broughthimtheclosesthewouldcometoAsia.
HisfirstvoyageintotheAtlanticOceanin1476nearlycosthimhislifeasthe
commercialfleethewassailingwithwasattackedbyFrenchprivateersoffthe
coastofPortugal.HisshipwasburnedandColumbushadtoswimtothe
PortugueseshoreandmakehiswaytoLisbon,Portugal,whereheeventually
settledandmarriedFelipaPerestrello.Thecouplehadoneson,Diegoin
about1480.HiswifediedsoonafterandColumbusmovedtoSpain.Hehada
secondsonFernandowhowasbornoutofwedlockin1488withBeatriz

ColumbusparticipatedinseveralotherexpeditionstoAfricagaining
knowledgeoftheAtlanticcurrentsflowingeastandwestfromtheCanary
Islands.MuslimdominationofthetraderoutesthroughtheMiddleEastmakes
traveltoIndiaandChinadifficult.Believingaroutesailingwestacrossthe
Atlanticwouldbequickerandsafer,Columbusdevisedaplantosailwestto
getreachtheEast.Heestimatedtheearthtobeasphereapproximately63%
itsactualsizeandthedistancebetweentheCanaryIslandsandJapantobe
about2,300miles.Manycontemporarynauticalexpertsdisagreed,adhering
tothesecondcenturyBCestimateoftheearth'scircumferenceat25,000
miles.ThismadethedistancebetweentheCanaryIslandsandJapanabout
12,200statutemiles.WhileexpertsdisagreedwithColumbusonmattersof
distance,theyconcurredthatawestwardvoyagefromEuropewouldbean
uninterruptedwaterroute.
FirstVoyagetotheNewWorld
RejectedbythePortuguesekingforathreeshipvoyageofdiscovery,Columbus
tookhisplanfirsttoGenoaandthentoVenicebutwasrejectedtheretoo.He
thenwenttotheSpanishmonarchyofIsabellaofCastilleandFerdinandof
Aragon,in1486.Theirnauticalexpertstoowereskepticalandinitially,Columbus
wasrejected.Theideahowever,musthaveintriguedthemonarchs,fortheykept
Columbusonaretainer.ButtheirfocuswasonawarwiththeMuslimsand
Columbuswouldhavetowait.
