Christopher

Columbus
Christopher Columbus was born in the Republic of Genoa, in what is today
Northwestern Italy.

Columbus learnt to sail from an early age and later worked as a business
agent, travelling around Europe to England, Ireland and later along the
West coast of Africa.
He was not a scholar but was an
enthusiastic self-educated man,
who read extensively on
astronomy, science and
navigation. He also became
fluent in Latin, Portuguese and
Spanish.

Some people think of him as the

"discoverer" of America, but this
is not strictly true. He never set
foot in North America.
Columbus made four trips between Spain and
the Americas between 1492 and 1503, and he
never once set foot in North America.

Columbus died in 1506, aged 54 from a heart

attack related to reactive arthritis

India without suspecting that he had stumbled upon the
American continent.

Columbus called all the people he met in the islands ‘Indians’,

because he was sure that he had reached the Indies.
