Thenayoungwoman'shead,hereyeswideopen.Arazorblade
movestowardoneoftheeyes.
Thelightcloudpassesnowacrossthemoon.

Therazorbladecutsthroughtheeyeoftheyoungwoman,
slicingit.
EndofPrologue.

EIGHTYEARSLATER
Adesertedstreet.Itisraining.
Acharacterdressedinadarkgraysuitappearsridinga
bicycle.Hishead,backandloinsareadornedinrufflesof
whitelinen.Arectangularboxwithblackandwhitediagonal
stripesissecuredtohischestbystraps.Thecharacter
pedalsmechanicallywithoutholdingthehandlebars,withhis
handsrestingonhisknees.
Thecharacterisseenfromthebackdowntothethighsina
mediumshot,superimposedlengthwiseonthestreetdown
whichheiscyclingwithhisbacktothecamera.
Thecharactermovestowardthecamerauntilthestripedbox
isseeninacloseup.
Anordinaryroomonthethirdflooronthesamestreet.A
younggirlwearingabrightlycoloreddressissittingin
themiddleoftheroomattentivelyreadingabook.Suddenly
shecomesoutofherreadingwithastart,listenswith
curiosity,freeingherselfofthebookbythrowingitona
nearbycouch.Thebookstaysopenwithareproductionof
Vermeer'sTheLacemakerononeofthepagesfacing
up.Theyoungwomanisconvincednowthatsomethingisin
theoffing:she,getsup,and,halfturning,walksinquick
stepstowardthewindow.
Thecharacterwehavementionedbeforehasjustatthisvery
momentstopped,belowonthestreet.Withoutofferingthe
leastresistance,outofinertia,heletshimselfcomedown
withthebicycleintothegutter,inthemidstofamud
heap.

Lookingenragedandresentful,theyoungwomanhurriesdown
thestairsandouttothestreet.
Closeupofthecharactersprawlingontheground,
expressionless,hispositionidenticaltothatatthe
momentofhisfall.
Theyoungwomancomesoutofthehouse,and,throwing
herselfonthecyclist,shefranticallykisseshimonthe
mouth,theeyesandthenose.Theraingetsheaviertothe
extentofblottingouttheprecedingscene.
Dissolvetotheboxwhosediagonalstripesaresuperimposed
onthoseoftherain.Handsequippedwithalittlekeyopen
thebox,pullingoutatiewrappedintissuepaper.Itmust
betakenintoaccountthattherain,thebox,thetissue
paperandthetieshouldallexhibitthesediagonalstripes,
withtheirsizesalonevarying.
Thesameroom.
Standingbythebed,theyoungwomanislookingatthe
clothingarticlesthathadbeenwornbythecharacter
ruffles,box,andthestiffcollarwiththeplaindarktie
alllaidoutasthoughtheywerewornbyapersonlying
onthebed.Theyoungwomanfinallydecidestopickupthe
collar,removingtheplaintieinordertoreplaceitwith
thestripedonewhichshehasjusttakenoutofthebox.
Sheputsitbackinthesameplace,andthensitsdownby
thebedinthepostureofapersonwatchingoverthedead.
(Note:Thebed,thatistosay,thebedspreadandthe
pillow,areslightlyrumpledanddepressedasifahuman
bodywerereallylyingthere).
Thewomanisawarethatsomeoneisstandingbehindherand
turnsaroundtoseewhoitis.Withouttheleastsurprise,
sheseesthecharacterwhonowiswithoutanyofhisformer
accessoryarticles,lookingveryattentivelyatsomething
inhisrighthand.Hisgreatabsorptionbetraysquitea
greatdealofanxiety.
Thewomanapproachesandlooksinturnatwhathehasinhis
hand.Closeupofthehand,themiddleofwhichisteeming
withantsswarmingoutofablackhole.Noneofthesefalls
off.
Dissolvetothearmpithairofayoungwomansprawledon
thesandofasunnybeach.Dissolvetoaseaurchinwhose
spinesrippleslightly.Dissolvetotheheadofanother
youngwomaninapowerfuloverheadshotframedbyaniris.
Theirisopenstorevealtheyoungwomansurroundedbya
throngofpeoplewhoaretryingtobreakthroughapolice
barrier.
Atthecenterofthiscircle,theyoungwoman,holdinga
stick,attemptstopickupaseveredhandwithpainted
fingernailsthatislyingontheground.Apolicemancomes

uptoher,sharplyreprimandingher;hebendsdownand
picksupthehandwhichhecarefullywrapsupandputsin
theboxthatwascarriedbythecyclist.Hehandsitallto
theyoungwoman,salutingherinamilitaryfashionwhile
shethankshim.
Asthepolicemanhandsherthebox,shemustappeartobe
carriedawaybyanextraordinaryemotionthatisolatesher
completelyfromeverythingaroundher.Itisasthoughshe
wereenthralledbytheechoesofdistantreligiousmusic;
perhapsmusicsheheardinherearliestchildhood.
Theircuriositysatisfied,thebystandersbegintodisperse
inalldirections.
Thisscenewillhavebeenseenbythecharacterswhomwe
haveleftintheroomonthethirdfloor.Theyareseen
throughthewindowpanesofthebalconyfromwhichmaybe
seentheendofthescenedescribedabove.Whenthe
policemanhandstheboxovertotheyoungwoman,thetwo
charactersonthebalconyappeartoalsobeovercometo
thepointoftearsbythesameemotion.Theirheadssway
asthoughfollowingtherhythmofthisimpalpablemusic.
Themanlooksattheyoungwomanandmakesagestureas
thoughheweresaying:"Didyousee?Hadn'tItoldyouso?"
Shelooksdownagainattheyoungwomanonthestreetwho
isnowallaloneand,asifpinneddowntothespot,ina
stateofutterrestraint.Carspassallaroundherat
breathtakingspeeds.Suddenlysheisrunoverbyoneofthe
carsandislefttherehorriblymutilated.
Itisthenthat,withthedecisivenessofamanfully
knowinghisrights,themangoesovertohiscompanion,and,
havinggazedlasciviouslystraightintohereyes,hegrabs
herbreaststhroughherdress.Closeupofthelustfulhands
overthebreasts.Thesearebaredasthedressdisappears.
Aterribleexpressionofalmostmortalanguishspreadsover
theman'sface,andabloodstreakeddribblerunsoutof
hismouthdrippingontheyoungwoman'sbarebreasts.
Thebreastsdisappeartobetransformedintothighswhich
themancontinuestopalpate.Hisexpressionhaschanged.
Hiseyessparklewithmaliceandlust.Hiswideopenmouth
nowclosesdownasiftightenedupbyasphincter.
Theyoungwomanmovesbacktowardthemiddleoftheroom,
followedbythemanwhoisstillinthesameposture.
Suddenly,shemakesaforcefulmotion,breakinghisholdon
her,freeingherselffromhisamorousadvances.
Theman'smouthtightenswithanger.
Sherealizesthatadisagreeableorviolentsceneisabout
totakeplace.Shemovesback,stepbystep,untilshe
reachesthecorneroftheroom,whereshetakesupa
positionbehindasmalltable.


Assumingthegesturesofthemelodramavillain,theman
looksaroundforsomethingorother.Heseesathisfeetthe
endofaropeandpicksitupwithhisrighthand.Hisleft
handgropesabouttooandgetsholdofanidenticalrope.
Gluedtothewalltheyoungwomanwatcheswithhorrorher
attacker'sstratagem.
Thelatteradvancestowardherdraggingwithgreateffort
thatwhichisattachedbehindtotheropes.
Weseepassingbeforeoureyesonthescreen:first,acork,
thenamelon,thentwoBrothersofChristianSchools,and
finallytwomagnificentgrandpianos.Thepianosareloaded
withtherottingcarcassesoftwodonkeys,theirfeet,
tails,hindquartersandexcrementspillingoutofthe
pianocases.Asoneofthepianospassesinfrontofthe
cameralens,alargedonkey'sheadisseenpressingthe
keyboard.
Pullingwithgreatdifficultythisburden,theman
desperatelystrainstowardtheyoungwoman,knockingover
chairs,tables,afloorlamp,etc.,etc.Thedonkey's
hindquartersgetcaughtineverything.Alamphangingfrom
theceilingisjostledbyastrippedbone,andcontinues
rockinguntiltheendofthescene.
Whenthemanisabouttoreachtheyoungwoman,shedodges
himwithaleapandescapes.Herattackerletsgoofthe
ropesandbeginspursuingher.Theyoungwomanopensa

Rightaway,sheturnsherheadtowardthemiddleofthenew
room,whichisidenticaltothepreviousone,butonwhich
thelightingconfersadifferentlook;theyoungwoman
sees...
Amansprawledonthebedwhoistheoneandthesameman
whosehandisstillcaughtinthedoor.Wearingtheruffles
withtheboxrestingonhischesthedoesnotmakethe
leastmovementbutliesthere,hiseyeswideopen,his
superstitiousexpressionseemingtosay:"Somethingreally
extraordinaryisnowabouttohappen!"

ABOUTTHREEO'CLOCKINTHEMORNING
Anewcharacterisseenfromthebackonthelanding;he
hasjuststoppedbytheentrancedoortotheapartment.He
ringsthebelloftheapartmentwheretheeventsaretaking

place.Wedon'tseethebellnortheelectrichammer,but
intheirplace,overthedoor,therearetwoholesthrough
whichpasstwohandsshakingasilvercocktailshaker.
Theiractionisinstantaneous,asinordinaryfilmswhena
doorbellbuttonisbeingpressed.
Themanlyingonthebedgivesastart.
Theyoungwomangoesandopensthedoor.
Thenewcomergoesdirectlytothebedandimperiously
ordersthemantogetup.Themancompliessogrudgingly
thattheotherisobligedtograbhimbytherufflesand
forcehimtohisfeet.
Havingtornofftherufflesonebyone,thenewcomerthrows
themoutofthewindow.Theboxfollowsthesamerouteand
sodothestrapswhichthemantriesinvaintosavefrom
thecatastrophe.Andthisleadsthenewcomertopunishthe
manbymakinghimgoandstandwithhisfacetooneofthe
walls.
Thenewcomerwillhavedoneallthiswithhisback
completelyturnedtothecamera.Heturnsaroundnowfor
thefirsttimeinordertogoandlookforsomethingonthe
othersideoftheroom.

Atthispointthephotographybecomeshazy.Thenewcomer
movesinslowmotionandwesetthathisfeaturesare
identicaltothoseoftheother;theyareoneandthesame
person,butforthefactthatthenewcomerlooksyounger
andmoredoleful,astheothermusthavebeenyearsbefore.
Thenewcomergoestowardthebackoftheroomwiththe
cameratrackingbackandkeepinghiminmediumcloseup.
Theschooldesktowardwhichourindividualisheading
enterstheframe.Therearetwobooksontheschooldesk,
aswellasvariousschoolobjects,whosepositionandmoral
meaningaretobecarefullydetermined.
Thenewcomerpicksupthetwobooksandturnstogoand
jointheotherman.Atthispointeverythinggoesbackto
normal,thefuzzinessandslowmotionhavingdisappeared.
Havingcomeuptotheman,thenewcomerdirectshimtohold
outhisarmsinacruciformposition,placesabookineach
hand,andordershimtoremainsoasapunishment.
Thepunishedcharacter'sexpressionhasnowbecomekeenand
treacherous.Heturnstofacethenewcomer.Thebookshe
hasbeenholdingturnintorevolvers.

Thenewcomerlooksathimwithtenderness,anexpression
thatbecomesmorepronouncedwitheachpassingmoment.
Theother,threateningthenewcomerwithhisgunsand
forcinghimtoputhishandsup,doesnotheedthelatter's
complianceandfiresbothrevolversathim.Mediumcloseup
ofthenewcomerfallingdownfatallywounded,hisfeatures
contortedinagony(thephotography'sfuzzinessisresumed
andthenewcomer'sfallisinslowmotion,inawaythatis
morepronouncedthanpreviously).
Weseeinthedistancethewoundedmanfalling;this,
however,happensnolongerinsidetheroombutinapark.
Seatednexttohimisamotionlesswomanwithbare
shoulders,whoisseenfrombehindleaningslightlyforward.
Ashefallsthewoundedmanattemptstoseizeandstrokeher
shoulders;oneofhishandsisturnedshakingtoward
himself;theotherbrushesagainsttheskinofthenaked
shoulders.Finallyhefallstotheground.
Viewfromafar.Afewpassersbyandseveralparkkeepers
rushovertohelp.Theypickhimupintheirarmsandbear
himawaythroughthewoods.
Letthepassionatelamemanplayarolehere.

Andwearebackatthesameroom.Adoor,theoneinwhich
thehandhadbeencaught,nowopensslowly.Theyoungwoman
wealreadyknowappears.Sheclosesthedoorbehindherand
staresveryattentivelyatthewallagainstwhichthe
murdererhadstood.
Themanisnolongerthere.Thewallisbare,withoutany
furnitureordecoration.Theyoungwomanmakesagestureof
vexationandimpatience.
Thewallisseenagain;inthemiddleofitthereisasmall
blackspot.
Seenmuchcloser,thissmallspotappearstobea
death'sheadmoth.
Closeupofthemoth.
Thedeath'sheadonthemoth'swingsfillsthewholescreen.
Themanwhowaswearingrufflescomessuddenlyintoviewin
amediumshotbringinghishandswiftlytohismouthas
thoughhewerelosinghisteeth.
Theyoungwomanlooksathimdisdainfully.

Whenthemantakesawayhishand,weseethathismouthhas
disappeared.
Theyoungwomanseemstobesayingtohim:"Well,andwhat

next?"andthenshetouchesupherlipswithalipstick.
Weseeagaintheman'shead.Hairbeginstosproutwhere
hismouthhadbeen.
Havingcaughtsightofthis,theyoungwomanstiflesacry
andswiftlyexaminesherarmpitwhichiscompletely
depilated.Shescornfullysticksouthertongueathim,
throwsashawloverhershoulders,and,openingthedoor
nearher,goesintotheadjacentroomwhichisawide
beach.
Athirdcharacteriswaitingforhernearthewater'sedge.
Theygreeteachotherveryamiably,andmeandertogether
downthewaterline.

Ashotoftheirlegsandthewavesbreakingattheirfeet.
Thecamerafollowstheminadollyshot.Thewavesgently
washashoreattheirfeet,first,thestraps,thenthe
stripedboxfollowedbytheruffles,andfinallythe
bicycle.Thisshotcontinuesamomentlongerwithout
anythingelsebeingwashedashore.
Theycontinuetheirwalkonthebeach,littlebylittle
fadingfromview,whileintheskyappearthewords:

Everythinghaschanged.
Weseenowadesertwithoutend.Weseethemanandthe
youngwomaninthecenter,sunkinsanduptotheirchests,
blinded,theirclothesintatters,devouredbythesunand
byswarmsofinsects.

TheSeashore
Onadesertedseashoreagirlisbeing
beached.Ittakesalongtime,andinsteadofa
backandforthmotion,thewavespullonly
outandthetidegoesvisiblyout.Atthe
sametime,thegirl,withoutmoving,seemshigher
andhigherupontheshore.Shewatchesthe
seadesertherwithinactivelonging,accepting
thesandwhich,asshedriesoff,slowlycollects
aroundher,idlywatchingabirdflylongacross
thesky.Theseashorewasaflatwideone,
withoutrocks.Now,suddenly,asshestirsin
very,veryslowmotionincloseup,wesee
thatherheadrestsagainsttherock.Slowly,in
slowmotion,shebeginstoturn,atthesame

timepullingherselfuptolookovertherock.
Inherhandtheseaweedhasimperceptibly
turnedtosandandassheraisesherhandto
helpherself,ashowerofsandfallsfromit.
Shestruggleswithaswimmingmotionalmost,
soslowitis,toraiseherselftolookoverthe
rock.

TheTable
Asherheadcomesupweseethatsheis
pullingherselfuptothelevelofalong,long
table.Peoplearesittingallalongthesidesof
it,chattingamiablyasifatalargedinner
partyexceptthatthereisnotmuchfood
beforethem.Allthroughthisshottheydo
notseemtoseeheratall.Shelooksfixedlyat
themanattheheadofthetable,butwe
cannotseehimclearlybothbecauseofthe
distanceandbecausehisfaceisalwaysrather
accidentally,asif,turnedawayfromafull
view.Shepullsherselfuponthetable,stillin
slowmotion,andbeginstocrawl,swimmingly,
towardsthemanattheheadofthetable.In
closeupsweseeherface,arms,andfeet
pushingthroughathickbrush,butinthelong
shotswecannotunderstandwhyitisso
difficultbecausesheseemstobecrawling
alongtheunencumberedtabletop.Wesee,in
pan,asiffromhercrawlingpointofview,
thefacesofthepeoplewhoarecompletely
unawareofwhatistranspiringontheirtable
top.Afteralongwhileshereachestheendof
thetableandseesthatthemanhasachess
boardinfrontofhim.Thechessgameisin
theopeningpart.Justasshereacheshim,he
rises,andeveryonealsorisesandtheybegin
formingasocialgroup.Fromthetabletop
shetriestocatchaglimpseofhisfacebut
again,asifaccidentally,itisalwaysobscured
byotherpeopleorturnedaway.Asshelooks
downattheboard,thechessgame,amazingly,
seemstobecontinuingofitsownaccord.It
makesseveralmovesandablackpawnis
taken;thatis,thewhitepawnwhichtakesit
simplyknocksitdownanditbeginsrolling
towardstheedgeoftheboard,androllsoff.
Shemovestowardsitandleansovertolook
overtheedgeoftheboardtowardsthefallen
pawn.

TheRockRiver
Lookingthroughaholeinalargerockthe
pawnfallsdowntoastreamofwaterbelow.

Sheletsherselfdowntheholeafteritand
beginstowalkamongtherocksapparently
afterthepawn.Herattitudehasurgencyat
firstandthenimperceptiblybecomesmuch
calmerandsoonevenverycasual.Suddenly
sheistalkingtoayoungmanwhowalksalong
besideher.Astheywalkalongcasuallyhe
changeshisidentitywithoutdisturbingthe
rhythmofthewalkorconversationorthe
actionortherelationship.Theycometoa
fallingdownshack,heslightlyaheadofher
andhefreelyandeasilygoesthroughthedoor
toitbutasshegoestofollowhim,inthe
entranceisasmallholeinthewall.She
sortofacceptsthisfactwithonlyaslight
distressandstartstocrawlinafterhim.

TheDyingManintheRoom
Sheisstandinginaroominwhichevery
thinghasbeendrapedinwhiteasinahouse
whichisclosedforthesummer.Someonehas
justclosedadoorleadingout.Whenshefirst
looksaroundtheroomitisdeserted.She
walksforwardabit.Now,whenshelooks
around,thereisamaninthebed.Somewhere
thecamerapansoverachessboard.Shewalks
tothefootofthebedandstandsthere.They
lookateachotheralongtimebutwithno
specialexpressions.Thensheisholdingacat
inherarmsasifsheisholdingliliesorababy.
Sheletsherarmsgoandthecatspringsdown.
Sheturnsandwalkstooneofthedoorsand
opensit.

TheMirrors[Neverfilmed]
Sheentersthebathroom.Shelooksat
herselfinthemirrorandthennoticesthe
othersidereflectionofherself.Shemovesthe
mirrorsbackandforth,looking,looking,
creatingnewimagesofherself.Thenshetires
ofthisandturnstoopenadoor,butthereare
several.Shetriesfirstoneandthentheother.
Theymakeanintricatepattern.Finally,she
openstheoneshecameinfrom,stepstothe
ledgeandlooksdown.

TheRockandSeaStones
Sheseessheisonalargerockoverlooking
theshoreandsea.Shehasalmoststeppedoff
andpullsbackwithfright.Then,very
fearfully,shestartstoclamberdownand

finallyreachestheshore.Shewalksalonga
littleandthenfindsastoneshelikesandbends
downandpicksitup.Prettysoonshesees
anotheroneandpicksthatoneup.Then
anotherandanother.Untilherarmsarefull
andoverflowingandshestillbendsdownand
theonesshehasfallanditamountstoafrenzy.

TheBlackandtheBlondeatChess
Suddenly,sheisnolongerholdingthe
stonesbutisstandingtherewatchingtwo
girlssittingoverachessboardplaying.They
seemgayaboutit,talkingtoeachotheras
theydoso.Thensheisstandinginbackof
them,becausetheyaresuddenlybothonone
sideoftheboardandshebeginsstrokingtheir
hair.Theyloveitandleantheirheadsback
likecatsandbegintolaughwithdelightand
she,strokingtheirhair,laughstoo.Thechess
gamegoesonalthoughtheydonotseemto
playveryseriously.Neverthelessthewhite
queenisabouttobetakenandastheblack
hairedonemovesafiguretoknockoffthe
whitequeen,thegirlsuddenlystopsstroking
theirhair,grabsthequeen,andbeginstorun.
