Discussing Lauriana
From the Film Showing at Cinematheque
While I was watching the first half of the film, I asked the person beside me if he was
familiar of the background of the film like when it was released because I thought that it was a
bomba film made in the 1970s or early 1980s. I was honestly really surprised when I found out
that it was made and released in the year 2013. You would think that Filipino directors had
learned their lesson from back then with regards to the length of films.
I liked the fact that its main focus was to put emphasis on the truth of military corruption
during the early 1970s. They showed examples like soldiers beating up their wives, abusing
them, having mistresses and also using their power and title to get personal gain. It also showed
how even back then, people had mental problems which werent easily able to be treated by
medicine or professional help. It showed the comparison between the toleration of those
situations back in the early 1980s and the present day. Some situations may be the same but
people dont take it the same way they did back then, or even the other way around. It opens our
eyes to how much has changed because of time. At first, I was surprised because the first half of
the film took place in the early 1970s perhaps then it suddenly transitioned into present day. I
expected that they would take the second half of the film and use it as the time to compare but
they ended up showing flashbacks from the first half which was very irrelevant and could have
been better off without.
To sum it all up, the film was off to a good start at first especially because of the story they
wanted to share. The only problem is that the story kept getting dragged on to make the movie
longer when it couldve been fine even if it finished an hour, it was about 2 hours long because
of it. Most scenes were repetitive and others made no sense at all after the first hour. Most scenes
showed sex, nudity, and promotion of alcohol consumption and how it could possibly take away
all your problems. I would call it a modern day bomb film.
