GUIDELINES IN CHORAL READING

1. Understand the poem.


2. Decide how the selection shall be broken up into group or solo part.
3. Divide your group according to their voicesthe lower pitch and the higher pitch.
4. The ones who have lower pitch in the must stay together and the ones who have higher pitch must
stay together also.
5. Talk over what you think the basic mood of the poem is. Work to get the feel of the poem.
6. Pronounce the word clearly.
7. Feel what you read. Let voice and body show the feeling
a) Speak sad, gloomy, or serious lines in low-pitched tones at a low rate.
b) Speak light, amusing or exciting lines with a high pitch and at a faster rate.

TECHNIQUES IN CHORAL READING
1. unison
everyone reads the poem together
2. two part arrangement
one group speaks alternately with another
3. soloist and chorus
one child reads specific lines, rest join in on other lines
4. alternate lines
one pair of children reads lines, then next

pair reads next lines etc.

5. echo reading
one person reads a line and the group echoes back
6. one word at a time
each child in turn reads one word of the selection
7. closure
one person reads the poetry line while others chime in on the last word
9. effects
accompany choral reading with sound effects, music, movement, gesture,
clapping rhythms
10. divide into groups
each group comes up with its own interpretation of the poem
each group could also rearrange the order of the lines of the poem
11. round
read in a round with each group starting and ending at different times.
