Term 2
We have begun the New Year with a BANG we had a great time learning, reading and writing about New Years
resolutions. The crown craft and fireworks art were lots of fun! I am looking forward to a great second term in
Grade 2! I want to thank you for helping your child complete the activities in the duotangs weekly.

Franais
In term two, we will learn and use French vocabulary associated with the winter season. We will continue to work on
using consonants and vowels to make simple sounds and combine them to make words. We will begin combining
consonant blends (ie. br, st, pl) and vowels. We will practice making sentences with subject, verb and compliment.
We will continue developing reading skills through guided reading (group) sessions. We are fortunate to have a class
of Grade 5 students who will read with us every day 4. The Grade 2 students not only practices their reading skills
but they also develop great confidence and friendships during this community building activity.
English Language Arts (ELA)
Students will continue participating in Guided Reading groups to develop their reading strategies. Thank you for
listening to your child read regularly and for completing Home Reading log. In our writing, we will continue to use 5
finger planners to organize writing pieces. We will start working on using interesting words and details as well as
conventions (punctuation, capitals, etc). We will continue to use Words Their Way (a spelling program that
addresses students specific abilities). The children might refer to this as Word Sorts at home. Students use
electronic stories (RAZ Kids) that they either listen to or read themselves and then answer questions to check for
understanding.

Mathematics
We will continue practicing the addition strategies that we have been learning (start with the bigger number,
doubles, doubles plus one) and add a new one: friends of 10. We will add the Make Ten Strategy. Subtraction
strategies will accompany each addition strategy. We will continue using Number of the Week for building number
sense and representing numbers in various ways. We will learn more about increasing & decreasing patterns;
collecting, recording and displaying data; and 2D and 3D shapes. Please continue practicing counting forwards and
backwards (0-100) and skip counting by 2, 5 and 10. Each student has a turn taking care of the calendar. The task
includes changing the date and month as well as the number of days of school represented by digits, ten frames
and straws in groups of 10s and 1s.

Our units this term are:

Properties of Solids, Liquids, and Gases - the students will use the design process to build an object that
floats and supports a mass.
Air and Water in the Environment the students will use the design process to make and test a device that
shows air movement. We might also create clouds and rain!

Later in the year, we will be making dioramas. I would appreciate it if you could send a shoe box (with a detachable lid) for this
project.

Social Studies

We continue the unit, My Local Community. We have begun map reading the students enjoy using Google
Earth on laptop computers to find Selkirk and other locations. Each student will be invited to bring an
object that s/he has had in her/his family for a long time in order to make connections with the past and
the community. A short description or explanation of the object will be helpful. During Festival we will learn
about various aspects of the French culture.

Health
We will discuss healthy lifestyle practices including nutrition, dental care habits, and physical activity. The
students will be bringing home a calendar to record their dental care habits.
