Describe the types of manufacturing processes by giving the examples of each.

All the Manufacturing Processes can be Put into Basic SIX Categories according to their
Nature
All These SIX Categories can be Sub-divided into TWO Sub-categories
o Conventional
o Unconventional or Advanced

Primary Forming Processes [Additive or Accretion] Example conventional type:

Casting, powder metallurgy; Example non-conventional type: Rapid prototyping
Material Removal or Machining [Subtractive] Example conventional type: Turning,
milling, drilling etc; Example non-conventional type: Abrasive Jet Machining (AJM),
Ultrasonic Machining (USM), Electro-discharge machining (EDM) etc.
Deforming Processes [Formative] Example conventional type: Various metal forming
processes such as cold and hot forming, Example non-conventional type: Laser
Bending, 3-D laser forming, High energy rate forming, Hot isostatic process etc.
Joining or Fabrication or Consolidation [Assembling] Example conventional type:
Joining processes of Mechanical bonding, atomic bonding(arc welding); Example
non-conventional type: EBW, LBW,USW etc.
Finishing and Surface Treatment Processes
Bulk Property Enhancing Processes [Heat Treatment]
