Redundancyisausefulmethodofincreasingreliabilityandoptimisingthebalancebetween
operationeffectivenessandexpenditure.Inthecontextofreliability,redundancysignifiesthata
systemwillcontinuetofunctionsatisfactorilyinspiteofthefailureofsomeofthecomponent
parts.
Thisresiliencetofailuresisobtainedbyprovidingalternativepathsofoperation,byarranging
selectedelementsofthesysteminparallel.Generally,alternativepathsofoperationcanbe
achievedbyfollowing:
StandbyRedundancy
ActiveorParallelRedundancy
N+1and1+1Redundancy

StandbyRedundancy
Standbyredundancymeansthatanalternativemeansofperformingthefunctionisprovidedbut
isinoperativeuntilneeded.Itisswitchedonuponfailureoftheprimarymeansofperformingthe
