ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING 1 The original land base and natural
resources of the Oceti Sakowin were under communal
stewardship prior to immigrant settlement. The Oceti Sakowin
tribes have a distinct and unique interrelationship with the
environment that contributes to South Dakota.

Introduction [5 minutes]

How many of you have ever drawn a map before?


Does anyone know what the key on a map is?
Today we are going to make a map of the reservations in South Dakota. But first we need to
discuss the different Indian reservations and where they are in South Dakota.

1. Teacher will introduce what a reservation is and how there are many in the US
2. Teacher will explain that there are 9 tribes in South Dakota
a. Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe
b. Crow Creek Sioux Tribe
c. Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe
d. Lower Brule Sioux Tribe
e. Oglala Sioux Tribe
f. Rosebud Sioux Tribe
g. Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate
h. Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
i. Yankton Sioux Tribe
3. Teacher will focus on the 9 reservations in SD by mentioning how each tribe lives in each
reservation

4. Teacher will explain the different natural and man-made resources within the different
reservations

5. Teacher will hand out map of South Dakota with the major cities on it
6. Teacher will show the example map and show students where each reservation is located within
South Dakota
7. With guided help, students will create their own map of the 9 reservations
8. Students will use markers to make a key of the different Indian reservations in South Dakota
a. Each reservation must be a different color, must be labeled, and must be put in the key
9. Students will also draw a picture for each resource that relates to each reservation

Conclusion [5 minutes]

Teacher will show completed map with correct reservations, resources, and key.
o Ask student to raise their hands if they think that their map matches the teachers.
Teacher will collect all of the maps to correct later
Teacher will review all the content covered
o 9 reservations, natural resources, and how to make a map correctly

Other Things to Consider


How will you differentiate instruction so as to reach all learners (advanced, struggling, average, etc.)

For average students include all the cities in South Dakota for their map

For more advanced students only include a few major cities in South Dakota for their map

For struggling students include all of the cities in South Dakota and give them outlines of the
reservations so they only need to color in the regions with different colors
