Thislabreportwillincludeactionpotentialsalsoknownasimpulses,toxinseffecton
actionpotentials,andcranialnerveandreflexactionpotential.Actionpotentialsina
multipolarneuron,wherethefirstpartoftheaxonistriggeredbyastimulusand
respondsintransmittingmillivoltsacrossthecellmembrane,riseandfallataconstant
pace(allornothing).Depolarizationisthereductionofamembranesrestingpotential
sothatthemembranebecomeslessnegative.Repolarizationisthestateintheaction
potentialprocessthatreturnsmembranepotentialbacktoitsnegativevoltageafterthe
depolarizationprocesshasoccurredbyselectivelyopeningandclosingofthe
potassiumchannelsonthecellmembrane.Theperiodwhenaxonscantbestimulated
togenerateanewactionpotentialiscalledtherefractoryperiodwhichlimitsimpulsesto
anaverageof100persecond.Thefollowingfigureswilladdressnervoussystemaction
