I ASSIGNMENT EEE AND ICE (IV SEMESTER)

1. Urn A contains 9 white and 7 black balls. Urn B contains 12 black

and 10 white balls. A ball is randomly drawn from Urn A and placed
in B and then a ball is transferred from Urn B to A. Finally, a ball is
selected from Urn A. What is the probability that this ball is white?
2. A man tosses a coin and throws a die beginning with a coin. What is
the probability that he will get a head before he gets a 5 or 6 on
the die?
3. A student takes his examination in 4 subjects P,Q,R ans S. He
estimates his chance of passing in P as 4/5, in Q as , in R as 5/6
and in S as 2/3. To qualify he must pass in P and atlest 2 other
subjects. What is the probability that he qualifies?
4. A 2n digit number starts with the digit 2 and all the digits are prime.
Then find the probability that the sum of all two consecutive digits
of the number is also prime?
5. At an art exhibition, there are 12 paintings of which 10 are original.
A visitor selects a painting at random and before he decides to buy,
he asks the opinion of an expert about the authenticity of the
painting. The expert is right in 9 out of 10 cases on average.
Given that the expert decides that the painting is authentic, what is
the probability that this is really the case?
If the expert decides that the painting is copy, then the visitor returns
it and chooses another one; what is the probability that his second
choice is original?
6. In a certain college 4% of boys and 1% of girls are taller than
165cm. Further 60% of the students are girls. If a student is selected
at random is taller that 165cm, what is the probability that the
student is a girl?
7. If P(A)=1/3,
P(B)= 1/4, P(AB)= 1/6. Find the following
P ( A B ) ,
probabilities: P(), P(B), P(B)
P ( A B ) , P ( A B ) .

8. For a certain binary communication channel, the probability that a

transmitted zero is received as zero is 0.95 and the probability that a
transmitted one is received as one is 0.90. If the probability that a
zero is transmitted is 0.4, find the probability that (a) a one is
received
(b) a one was transmitted given that a one was received.

9. Let X be a continuous random variable with p.d.f given by

f(x)

ax
0 x 1
a
1 x 2
ax 3a 2 x 3
0
elsewhere

(i)
Determine the constant a
(ii) Determine F(x).
10. A coin is tossed till a first head appears. Let X denote number of
tosses and prob(H)=p and prob(T)=q. Find E(X) and V(X).
