METAL FUME FEVER

When galvanized metal is being welded, the fumes may contain zinc oxide from the
metallic coating and unless its inhalation is prevented, a feeling of chill with shivering
and perspiring may follow.
This is known as METAL FUME FEVER. The effects are usually acute and transitory,
coming on a few hours after the fumes have been inhaled and passing off completely in
24 hours.
Given proper planning, there is no reason why these cases should occur at all.
Provision should always be made for the removal of fumes by mechanical means. This
is best achieved by using localized exhaust ventilation where an elongated hood is
placed near to the seam being welded.
Another practical method is to use an air mover.
One of these two methods should always be used when work is taking place inside. On
outside work, some dilution of the fume is already taking place but reliance on the wind
factor is not always sufficient.
Respiratory protection need only be worn when mechanical ventilation cannot be used.
