Gear When faced with three gears the question can

broken down into two parts. First work on
Exercisbe
Gears A and B. When this has been solved work
on gears B and C.

The diagram shows a gear train composed of
three gears. Gear A revolves at 60 revs/min in a
clockwise direction.
What is the output in revolutions per minute at
Gear C?
In what direction does Gear C revolve ?
Solution:

Gear Ratio = 2/1

Multiply the two gear ratios together to get the
TOTAL gear ratio. In the above figure we see
that gear C will make TWO rotations for every

one rotation of gear A.

60 rpm X 2/1 = 120 rpm

An example regarding 'compound gears'.

Gears C and B represent a compound gear as
they appear 'fixed' together. When drawn with a
compass they have the same center. Two gears
'fixed' together in this way rotate together and
at the same RPM. When answering a question
like this split it into two parts. Treat gears A and
B as one question AND C and D as the second
part.
What is the output in revs/min at D and what is
the direction of rotation if Gear A rotates in a
clockwise direction at 30 revs/min?
Solution
Gear A 120 Teeth
Gear B 40 Teeth
Gear C 80 Teeth
Gear D 20 Teeth

Gear Ratio = 120/40 X 80/20

What is the rev/min at Gear D and what

Direction?

A compound gear train is one which has two or more gears attached to the same shaft. In actual fact it is

a combination of two or more gear trains. See the animation below.

In the example above the gear ratio will be

16:1
Gear "D" will turn once for every 16 turns of gear "A"

Notice in the compound gear train on the left that four gears are
used and that gears "B" and "C" are fixed together on the same
shaft.
When the driver gear "A" makes one complete turn gear "B" turns
1/4 of a full rotation. This also means that gear "C" also turns 1/4
of a full rotation.
Gear "D" will turn through 1/16(1/4 X1/4) of a turn. The gear ratio
for this compound gear train is 16:1
