A note on Stokes

Law---Stokes law states that for a spherical body moving through a viscous fluid,
the viscous force experienced by it is given by
where Fd is the frictional force known as Stokes' drag acting on the interface between the fluid
and the particle, is the dynamic viscosity , R is the radius of the spherical object, and V is the flow
velocity relative to the object.

DOUBT--- The Force mentioned in the problem, is it the force experienced by the body after
reaching terminal velocity OR is it true for any instant of time?
soln-- The Force mentioned in the problem is the force experienced by the spherical object at any
instant of time. When it hasnt reached the terminal velocity yet, the v in the equation is instantaneous
velocity of the ball. So this velocity keeps on changing because as the ball is descending. As this velocity
keeps on increasing, Fd (frictional force) also keeps on increasing. Thereafter a stage is reached where

Mg=

This is when the object stops accelerating and reaches a constant velocity called TERMINAL
VELOCITY.
