1. In Dominica 28% of people currently in the workforce, work in services.
2. The main types of services in Dominica include financial services, trading
services, health services, electricity services, and manufacturing services.
3. The first inhabitants of Dominica were thought to be the Arawak Indians. They
were said to come from South America and were fleeing from other South
Americans. Naturally they built settlements. In the early 16 th century the Spanish
discovered Dominica, along with naming it. The Spanish began utilizing the
island for its resources and land space. They built settlements which brought
much attention to the island. Both the British and the French became interested
in the island, and from that point on Dominica was well known around the world
and caused conflicts among different countries.

Urban Patterns
1. 50,552 people and of 69.5% of the total population live in Urban areas, in
Dominica.
2. The largest or most populated city in Dominica is the Urban capital Roseau, and
has a population of approximately 15,000 people. It can be classified as a
primate city, because Roseau is a lot better known and has a greater population
than other Dominican cities.
3. The Griffin-Ford model can be applied to Dominica because it has a disamenity
sector, government buildings, cathedrals, and plazas. The Griffin-Ford model is
also meant for Latin America in which Dominica can be classified.
4. Gender and economic issues determine social stratification in the Dominica.
There is little social mobility. The higher class usually consists of citizens living
in urban areas. The lower class consists of citizens who live in rural areas and
are usually women and children.
5. Dominica is facing major pollution in urban areas from factors such as
urban development, road construction, quarries, and deforestation. This pollution

is causing health problems. It is also causing contaminated water and


contaminated air.
