Theories on the Origin of the Philippine Archipelago


Theory (meaning) - Arroyo
a. Plate Tectonic Theory - Arroyo
Comes from the idea that the movement of the earths crust is the result of the
continental plate.
It is believed that the movements of the lands on the surface of the earth are
caused by the movements of the land surface of the earth are caused by the
movements of these continental plates.
Cretaceous Period (65-100 million years ago)

First Islands in the Philippines were formed during this period.


Bicol Peninsula, Leyte, and parts of Eastern Mindanao
Zambales and Sierra Madre were pushed upward due to process of
diastrophism

b. Sundan Shelf Theory De Mesa

Pleistocene Period (6-10 million years ago)


Occurrence of the Glacial Period in the Northern part of the world, resulted to
the formation of the Sundan Shelf
Sundan Shelf consist of: Northern Philippines, Taiwan, Borneo, Sulu and
Palawan
The formation of Sundan Shelf led to the migration of animals as well as
existence of the first humans in the Philippines (Homo Sapiens and Homo
Erectus)
