Introduction
1.1
Foreword
This User Manual describes the iCOM Control System. It contains information concerning the architectures
of the control systems as well as the settings required to obtain the desired behavior of the Unit.
The iCOM System will effectively manage all the different functions of Liebert-Hiross air conditioning units.
In the following sections first the Hardware, and later the Software (Firmware) are explained in detail.
Hardware
2.1
The iCOM I/O boards are microprocessor-based electronic boards, which are able to manage the devices
and the sensors installed in the unit.
iCOM I/O boards are installed in the electrical panel of indoor-units together with a simple user-interface
module (3 Digits Display), which allows to read/set/reset values, parameters and alarms.
Please note that there are 2 different iCOM I/O boards:
iCOM Large Board, suitable to drive double compressor units.
iCOM Medium Board, suitable to drive single compressor and chilled water units.

iCOM THB
The temperature / humidity board (iCOM THB) is supplied on all systems with iCOM controls. The cable is
plugged into Plug P67 (or P66) on the iCOM Board and transmits information using CAN (Controlled Area
Network) communication. Troubleshooting is accomplished by observing a LED located on the THB (DS1).
If the LED is continuously switched on the communication is established. If the LED is blinking, no data are
sent to the board. In that case the addressing and / or the termination have to be checked (see table iCOM
THB DIP-Switch and Jumper settings).

Networking
3.1
Communication protocols
Both boards, the large and the small board, can utilize various communication protocols:
3.1.1
These are 2 so called Master Communications. The master communication allows the communication from
board to board, as well as from board to the system display.
a) Global Bus Protocol (via Ethernet)
b) Hirobus Master
There are parameters in the 3 Digits Display as well as in the large Coldfire display to preset the
communication type.
The Global Bus Protocol is the main protocol for iCOM Boards and iCOM Displays; Hirobus is the Protocol
used by Hiromatic E and Microface E.
In mixed installations one iCOM Board can be set to be the Converter between these two protocols, to
make it possible to communicate between iCOM components and Microface E and Hiromatic E.
See chapter 3.2.3 on page 25.
3.1.2
These are 2 so called Slave Communications. The slave communication allows the board to communicate
with its local devices, such as sensors, 3 Digits Display, extension boards for humidifier, navigator etc.
a) CAN Bus
b) Hirobus Slave
CAN Bus and Hirobus Slave are always available in parallel, independent of the U2U communication
method.
3.1.3
Monitoring Communications
Both iCOM Boards provide a Hironet connection (RS485), with the same data-points as the Microface
Control System. iCOM Boards identify themselves as being a Microface, therefore all Hirolink types, which
are compatible to a Microface are compatible to an iCOM Board too.
The iCOM Coldfire displays do not provide a monitoring connection.
22
22
ENGLISH
3.2
3.2.1
Up to 16 iCOM Boards and 16 iCOM Displays can be connected into a private (no connection to the
outside world) Ethernet network.
iCOM Boards: The IP Address, the Netmask address, the Gateway address, the U2U Address and the U2U
group have to be checked / set according chapter 4.1.7, The 3 Digits Display Communication Parameters
on page 37, using the 3 Digits Display or an iCOM Display.
iCOM Displays: The IP Address, the Netmask address, the Gateway address, the U2U Address and the U2U
group have to be checked / set according table System/Network Setup on page 53. The settings can be
done directly using the iCOM Display.
3.2.1.1 Connection via Crossed Ethernet Cable
Two devices (2 iCOM Boards or 1 iCOM Board + 1 iCOM Display) can be connected using a crossed
Ethernet cable, see Figure 23 GBP using a crossed Ethernet cable (max cable length is 50 meters). The
display can be powered through CAN or through an external power supply.
Note: the units are shipped out of the factory using the crossed cable connection between board and iCOM
Display. If a connection via switch has to be done, this cable has to be removed and replaced with a straightthrough Ethernet cable.

Groups function
All units, which are interconnected inside the same LAN, will communicate to each other, if they have the
same IP settings (example: 192.168.1.x). This will create problems when multiple rooms have to be
connected to the same LAN, and the IP Addresses are inside the same range.
There are 2 possibilities to split the rooms between each other:
Physical disconnection, using 2 switches
The groups function: each iCOM Board / iCOM Display has, in addition to the IP settings, also a
group number (default = 1). To split the rooms it is only necessary to set the group parameter on units which
belong to room #2 to 2. Units of different groups will not communicate to each other even if connected into
the same LAN the group function is like to separate the components physically.
Note:
the IP Addresses of all connected devices need to be unique no double numbers of IP Addresses
are allowed
the U2U Addresses start with 1 within each group, in the same way as the two groups would be
physically disconnected.

3.2.2
Only Microfaces and Hiromatic can be connected together using the Hirobus Master. iCOM products
CANNOT communicate using Hirobus Master, for mixed network see next chapter.
3.2.3
This type of U2U network can be established to combine iCOM Boards, iCOM Displays, Microfaces E and
Hiromatics E into one common U2U network. Up to 16 control boards (mixed between iCOM Boards and
Microfaces) and 16 displays (mixed between iCOM Displays and Hiromatics) can be interconnected through
this GBP / Hirobus Bus-system.
This Bus-system will be GBP (Ethernet) for all iCOM parts and Hirobus Master for Microfaces and
Hiromatics. In the middle of these 2 Buses an iCOM control Board will play the role of a converter: its U2U
setting must be set to "# [means Converter] using the 3 Digits Display or using an iCOM Display; all other
iCOM components have to be set to %; all Microfaces and Hiromatics communicate through Hirobus
(this is the default, non-changeable U2U protocol for such devices). See 4.1.7, The 3 Digits Display
Communication Parameters on page 37.
The Converter Board (besides its normal role to control the air-conditioner) communicates both in GPB and
Hirobus, and translates the GBP information into Hirobus, and vice-versa.
Note 1: ONLY 1 board inside a network can be set as Converter (Con); a network can consist of ONE
Hirobus communication part, of ONE GBP communication part, and the Converter in the middle.
Note 2:
Microface and Hiromatic need to have specific Eproms with the indication LX at the end of the version
number. See chapter 2.6,
Spare Parts List on page 21.
Note 3: The addresses of the boards can be selected as requested, important is to have a consecutive
numbering, w/o holes - but there is no restriction which unit has which number depending on the selected
U2U communication method. Microface E and iCOM Boards have to be addressed as described in the
previous two chapters.
Note 4:
Hiromatics E will take the U2U Address automatically, starting from 33. iCOM Displays (which need a
manual address setting) shall be numbered starting from 64 downwards, to avoid conflicts with Hiromatics.
Note 5:
Restrictions in cable-length remain the same as described for each protocol type in the previous two
chapters (Hirobus cable total length: 300 meters, GBP Ethernet cable: max. 50 meters)

CAN termination:
The CAN Bus needs to be terminated. If a CAN device is the first or the last component in the CAN Bus, the
termination Jumper has to be set to 2-3. If a CAN device is in the middle between other CAN devices, no
termination has to be set, the jumper remains on 1-2.
In the example below the HCB and the iCOM Control Board need to have the termination set (P78=2-3); the
THB in the middle needs no termination P3= (1-2).

Standby units normally are halted and will start only in case of
an alarm of another unit in the network. This parameter defines
how many units will be in standby mode.
Possible settings are: NO or YES.
NO means no rotation by time, only in case of an alarm the
faulty unit will be switched off and the standby unit will be
started. If set to YES, rotation will be done every 24 hours,
counted from the last power on of unit #1.
Setting this parameter will start the standby unit(s) not only in
case of an alarm on an active unit, but also in case of
increasing and/or decreasing of temperature and/or humidity to
assist the active unit(s).
NOTE: Cascade settings force Teamwork 1!
Possible Settings:

When set to 'YES' the system is forced to perform one rotation
of the standby units. Working only when 'Rotation Frequency' is
not set to 'NO'.
When set to Yes all standby units are activated in case of High

A low limit for the Supply Air Temperature. The air conditioning unit will try to always keep the Supply Air Temperature greater than the
value set in this parameter. If set to a value different from NO a NTC sensor must be installed inside the unit (or near it) in the supply air
flow path. To decide its cooling status, iCOM uses the lower between a) the deviation of Return Air Temperature from Temperature Setpoint
and b) the deviation of Supply Air Temperature from Supply Air Setpoint. Note: Supply Limit is capable to reduce the opening of dampers or
valves, but will never stop a compressor. (Exception: the 2nd compressor in a twin compressor unit will not start if the supply temperature is
already too low, but it will not be stopped if it becomes too low once started).

The temperature of the refrigerant mixture (water or glycol and water) entering the unit. In Freecooling or Dual Fluid units, depending on the
value set in DT Room-Glycol, it is only displayed or used to decide the Freecooling Status of the unit. In Freecooling units it also drives the
analogue output for the Dry-Cooler. Each unit uses its own sensor for control.

0,1
A read only value. It is the temperature of the air delivery of the unit. Available only when the corresponding sensor is installed. This value
could influence the control, if Supply Limit is set.
-28.0-100.0 C
0,1
The temperature of the environment outside the room. It is used, together with the Return Air Temperature, to decide the Freecooling status
of the unit. If multiple units are connected via LAN each unit will work with the average of the values read by all sensors. The value
displayed here is this average.
Off, Start, On
Indicates the actual status of the Freecooling mode of the unit. 'START' means that the condition on the outdoor temperature is fulfilled but
other conditions (on glycol temperature. and/or return air temperature) are not yet fulfilled.

Normally best results will be reached if the 'AUTOSET' is enabled. The Proportional Band is divided in two equal parts, one part for cooling,

width of the hysteresis. If Teamwork Mode 1 is selected, the P-Band belongs to the whole system.
NOTE: Too small P-Band will cause the bad control quality (hunting).

The units work in stand-alone, using their own sensors for regulation. This setting must be used in multi-room installations. Set to 1 if the
units shall operate as one system. For control the average T+H of all units in operation is used. All units together are working like one big
unit. Not to be set in multi-zone rooms.
Set to 2 if the units shall operate in stand-alone, but with restrictions from the average T+H. The averages decide, if cooling or heating, hum
or Dehum has to be performed, the units itself decide about according their own sensors. Teamwork setting 2 is a stand-alone mode
operation, but 'mastered' from the average T+H, to avoid competition between the units. To be set in multi-zone or unbalanced rooms.
U2U Group
1-99
The U2U Group parameter defines to which group of units/displays the device belongs to. Using the group functionality, makes it possible
to run multiple, independent groups of units inside the same LAN.

Monitoring Protocol *
S835
iCOM Boards provide a Hironet connection (RS485), with the same data-points as the Microface Control System. iCOM Boards identify
themselves as being a Microface, therefore all Hirolink types, which are compatible to a Microface are compatible to an iCOM Board too.
iCOM Displays do not provide a monitoring connection.

The board can communicate in GBP (Global Bus Protocol) or in HB (Hirobus). Hirobus has to be selected if no iCOM Display is inside the
network, and the network has to be established with Hirobus cables only.
GBP can be selected for all iCOM components (Ethernet network); and if also Microfaces or Hiromatics E are inside the network
[connected through Hirobus], one iCOM Board has to play the role of a converter between the 2 protocols: in that case this iCOM Board has
to be set as CON.

For correct setting please refer to the following table:
None = No Freecooling
Air = FC by opening AIR-Damper
Glycol = FC by opening Water Valve(s)
Yes, No
If set to YES, all parameters of the selected unit will be changed automatically to pre-defined values. To be used after iCOM hardware
update only.
NOTE: 'YES' jumps back to 'NO' (it behaves as a 'push button').

Use 'AUTOSET AIRFLOW' to set. Depending on the value assigned to this parameter, iCOM will generate warning or alarm when the
voltage generated by airflow sensor is lower than the threshold set. If a differential pressure switch is used, SWI has to be set.
Autoset Airflow
No, Yes
Stop the unit first. Set parameter to 'YES'. The unit will start the fan for 30 seconds, and then wait 30 seconds with fan off. After that the
value will be set. If a warning appears, there was no reaction from the airflow device.
Airflow Value
0-100%
Read only analogue value (percentage) that informs about the airflow speed inside the unit. This value can be taken into account when
setting the Low Airflow At parameter.
A116
Fan Failure
