GEAR TRAIN MACHINE PROBLEMS

1. In a broaching machine, the shaft A carries pulley 24-inches in diameter which is driven by a belt from a
12-inches pulley on the countershaft overhead, the latter turning 150rpm. The gears 2 and 4 have 12 teeth
each, and 3 and 5 have 60 teeth. Gear 5 is fast to 6, which has 10 teeth and a circular pitch of 1.047-inches
and which engages with rack 7 to which is attached the broach. Find the speed with which the broach is
drawn through the work in inches per minute.

2. In a brick-making machine is found this train of gears. A motor carrying pulley E, which is 6-inches in
diameter, drives the machine. The wide-faced roller F, 12-inches in diameter, drives a conveyor belt. If the
motor runs at 1200rpm, what is the speed of the conveyor belt in feet per minute?

3. A is a double-threaded worm on shaft S. B is the worm gear having 53 teeth. The rest of the gears in the
train are spur gears having teeth as follows: 4, 82; 5, 64; 6, 74; 7, 31; 8, 23. Through what angle does shaft S
makes 1 turn.

4. 2 has 20 teeth; 3, 80 teeth; 5, 30 teeth. While S1 makes 5 turns, S2 makes 2-2/3 in the same direction. How
many teeth on 4? Are 1 or 2 idles needed between 4 and 5?

5. Determine the revolution per minute and direction of rotation of gear G in the gear train shown in the
figure.

6. Determine the revolutions per minute of gear F in the figure. What is its direction of rotation when viewed
from the right end?

7. Determine the number of teeth on sprocket D in the figure, if the cable speed is to be 2 ft/s approximately.
What is the direction of rotation of A when viewed from the right end?

8. In the reverted gear train shown in the figure, gears A and B have a module of 2.5 mm and gears C and D
have a module of 2 mm. Determine suitable tooth numbers for these gears if the velocity ratio is to be 11.4
approximately. The number of teeth on each gear is to be a minimum, but not less than 24.

9. The figure shows a three-speed shiftable transmission. The tooth numbers are in the figure. Shaft F, with
cluster of gears E, G and H, is capable of sliding left and right to engage and disengage the three gear sets in
turn. Design the three riverted stages to give output speeds at shafts F of 150, 350, and 550 rpm for an
input speed of 450 rpm to shaft D.
